Durban 3 day safari tour 15-17th January 2015

We began in Umkomaas where I collected my clients after they had been diving the reefs of Aliwal Shoal. It would now be time to do a 3 day Durban safari tour with them and show them the land animals.

We began the almost 4 hour drive up to Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve on route covering the history of the area and any questions my clients had.

We stopped at a Cat rehabilitation centre near Hluhluwe for interaction with 4 different species of endangered wild cats, namely Cheetah, Serval, Caracal and African Wild Cat.

Upon arrival we got to interact with tour 3.5 month old Cheetah cubs which will be being used for breeding. My clients loved it!

The cutest things was when it was time for them to leave and they were inside the Land Cruiser which for me is a warped sense of reality as usually they are outside the vehicle and we are inside the vehicles.

We then moved on to the African Wild cats the most primitive specie of small cat in the world; all our domestic cats would have had their origins from the African Wild cat.

After spending time with these chaps we moved on to the Caracal and I got a decent photo of one of them.

In the Caracal enclosure I also spotted a Damsel fly which I managed to get a photo of so I could look it up at a later stage!

It was then time to visit and interact with the big male Cheetahs which my clients really enjoyed. I managed to get a nice picture of one of the males while he stayed away from his brother during our interactions with him.

This was turning out to be an exciting Durban safari tour.

It was now time to visit the Serval and we managed to get a great shot of one up in the tree snarling at us below.

After having such a great time with the Cats we decided to head into Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve the oldest game reserve in Africa and home to the Big 5, the Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Buffalo and Elephant.

Upon arrival we covered the usual entrance procedure and did not really see too much before we stopped for lunch. Having said that it was a hot day and it was the middle of it!

We settled into Hilltop camp and had some lunch before checking in and getting luggage to the rooms. At 4pm we headed out and began our Safari to see what we could find. We found loads of herds of Buffalo in the distance so I did not bother with taking those pictures.

We did have a great sighting with some Rhino crossing the road in front of us.

As we continued we spotted some baboons on the road and got a nice picture during the Durban 3 Day safari tour of this Baboon.

We found some lovely Giraffe and our first sighting of Giraffe was an old male we later on found a whole journey of about 10 Giraffe. One of these Giraffes decided to stick his tongue out which looked really funny!

At the same spot we found a Dazzle of Zebra which also crossed in front of our car and we managed to get a great photo. Man our Durban 3 day safari tour was turning out to be really good.

It was time to prepare for the sunset and the good light we would experience. As my client we keen photographer I took then to one of the highest points in the game reserve and we got out as it was a safe spot and enjoyed the views. I tried my hand at the art of Photography and thought I would advertise myself!

We were not going to move off to another spot for the actual sunset and on the way came across a large herd of Buffalo one of which gave us the stare!

As we continued we found our way to a lovely spot to view the sun set which had some cloud around it at this point and was not as good as I was hoping but still great to see on one of my Durban safari tours.

We had to rush back and got in on time at 7pm. Dinner was also booked for 7pm so we just went straight in and enjoyed a meal in the restaurant before heading off to bed to prepare for the 05:30 start the following day.

Day 2 Durban 3 day safari tour

We began day 2 of our Durban safari tour at 05:30 am and took with us our breakfast packs that we got from the lodge.

We headed down south into the Umfolozi section of the game reserve to try and find cats and Elephants.

Within minutes we spotted Zebra, Giraffe and Rhino!

Our first good sighting was of a lovely Giraffe.

Moving along we found some amazing Zebra in a large herd which posed so well for us that I had to put the picture up from this safari tour.

Finally we spotted an Elephant and he was right next to the road so we spent some time with him before moving on and having some great luck in finding a Black Rhino and calf. It is so rare that I was really happy about it.

We made our way down to the White Umfolozi river where we found a lot of Vultures 2 of them being the endangered Lapped faced Vulture. This is always interesting as they are natures clean up team and they were all either sunning themselves or bathing.

We then made our way down to Bhejane hide and we had some amazing sighting at this watering hole that we ended up spending 2 hours their.

First the Zebra came, then the Elephants and Buffalo. Then we had Impala and Wildebeest with Vervet Monkeys, Monitor Lizard, Warthogs and even more Elephants.

It was like a zoo as we just had animals keep coming for the 2 hours to the watering hole. This really made our day safari and the quality of these sightings was also amazing.

We had been very lucky and escaped the midday heat. By the time we got back on the road it was 40 degrees and humid like you cannot believe. We decided to revert to air-conditioning before we got to our lunch stop at Centenary center.

On route we spotted an Elephant or 4 and one as I like to say had 5 legs! What an amazing sighting.

We got up to lunch and also had a look at the curio shop before the long drive back to camp. We arrived back at 3 pm at Hilltop where we sorted out dinner arrangements and the rest of the day. After 9 hours of driving or being out their looking for animals we decided to rest and not go back out as a big storm was on they way and then it hit up.

Good job we did not go out it was a big storm which briefly stopped for us to get down for dinner before it bucketed it down and we got drenched just getting back into the vehicle to go to the rooms.

Day 3: Durban 3 day safari tour

Day 3 of our Durban safari tour went exactly as I wished it to and finally the dream I had on the first night of Lions feeding on a Zebra almost came true.

We began with breakfast and check out before heading down south into Umfolozi as we had 3 hours Safari time left before we would head to St Lucia for the 2 hour boat cruise.

Our first major sighting apart from what we had seen already was Black Rhino mother and calf with a male who was keen on mating with her. She just kept moving away.

As we made it down to the Nyalazi gate I spotted 4 Southern ground hornbills and being an endangered bird was really exciting for me.

They were just roaming around as they do looking for grubs, grasshoppers etc

We moved on and to our surprise we spotted Hyenas on a hill munching on a Carcass of a Wildebeest that must have been killed by Lions. This was close enough to my dream on night one so I was really happy until; 2 park field staff walked straight up to the Carcass and removed the tail and the leg!

I could not believe my eyes as I am aware that these items are used by Sangomas (Fortune tellers) in the Zulu Nation for muthi medicine.

We obviously confronted them getting some elaborate story about it being for research. I also reported this and then more stories came out from the management as well as apologies. It is clear the rot always starts at the top I am afraid.

We moved on and with some great luck spotted a male Lion under some bushes not that far from the Kill we had just seen.

He was really tucked away and this made it really hard for a photograph but a Lion is a Lion as I always say to my clients.

We returned to the Carcass and found the Hyenas back and a few vulture but we needed to continue on and get to St Lucia wetlands for our 2 hour boat cruise. It would be there that we would see Hippos and crocodiles.

The hour drive went smoothly and we drove through the rural communities to St Lucia – Isimangeliso wetland park about an hour away from the gate.

The boat was fairly quiet and it was very pleasant and we cruised in the estuary and enjoyed all the wild life.

We had many great sightings of Hippos which are a guaranteed sighting as St Lucia is the largest estuarine system in Southern Africa.

We ended our cruise and had to head straight back to King Shaka International airport as my clients were on a flight out that evening.

We made good time and sadly for my clients their journey had come to an end and they had to head home but not after having a great 3 days with me and diving with Sharks down the coast.

Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve – 3 Day Durban Safari Tour 4-6 October 2013

After a slightly later start we left the Benjamin in Durban and headed off for our Durban Safari Tour to the Cat rehab center Emdoneni where we began with the Tour of the Rehabilitation center. The clients loved this and it is always an amazing experience to get close to such big cats aswell as the smaller more elusive and endangered Cats – Caracal, Serval and African Wild Cat.

Once done we headed off to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve where we entered the park and in the heat of the day still found animals, Buffalo, Zebra, Rhino and a few others.

We stopped for lunch at Hilltop camp our destination for the next couple of nights.

After this we headed straight back out onto the reserve and were lucky to have two amazing sightings with elephant crossing the road and swimming across the Hluhluwe River.

Already by this point we had seen so much including giraffe and Wildebeest that we only had the Cats Missing.

We returned for dinner and then Bed.

Day 2; Durban 3 Day Safari Tour

We got up early and like Race car drivers waiting for the green light we shot off into the reserve and had again some good luck. Sadly though no cats but we saw load of other things and great sightings too.

We returned for Brunch Buffet and a little rest before lunch and we then returned to the reserve to see what we could find.

We again did well considering we detoured to the curio shop at the gate for 30 min. The sightings where thick and fast up north. We the needed to get back for the evening open vehicle game drive where the clients saw Hyena, Gennets and Scrub hares as part of the nocturnals.

When the returned I met them back at Dinner and they were happy to be back.

Day 3; durban 3 day Safari Tour, St Lucia(isimangeliso Wetland Park)

The next morning I knew it was do or die and nature can be cruel sometimes so I just kept positive. We had breakfast and flew down south in search of lions in the open areas. At the Umfolozi bridge we did find a subadult Lion cub and after a quick visit to Mpila camp we returned and found 2 adult Lioness up of the banks of the river. So where hit the jackpot!

From Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve we headed off to Isimangeliso Wetland park where we nailed the Hippos and crocodiles even though it was very windy. It was great and then it was time for lunch. No Wimpy this time but and new place where the waiter was so intent on telling jokes that he forgot one of my clients main meals! – Gosh … Never again.

It was finally time to hit the road for Durban and we got back after dark to the hotel. We had a quick group photo and it was time to say goodbye to my clients.

Hluhluwe umfolozi 3 day Safari Tour, St lucia and Cat rehab center 27-29 September 2013

Well what a great Durban Safari 3 Day tour we had such a mixed bag of weather but thats what gave us the results. Most people dislike the rain as say its so hard to see or find things well it works in the favour of the cats and boy did we benefit.

After departing from Durban we did the usual Cat rehab tour which the clients loved. Then we headed into Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve. It was so hot and humid (we call it a Berg wind) – the hot winds before the rain. The game reserve was pumping and from having a concern about finding elephants we sorted that out very well on the first afternoon with a big herd of 70 + at a river bridge crossing in Hluhluwe.

We spend 40 minutes with the great beasts making the most of the diverse sighting, mothers with babies, Males ripping branches of Sycamore fig trees. The list went on!

Before all of this of course we had lunch and checked in at Hilltop camp Hluhluwe.

The evening night drive wasnt so good but at least it wasnt cold or wet as the next days to follow were.

It was a Braai night friday and great food.

    Bed was then calling.

Day 2 : Durban 3 Day Safari Tour

We rose early and headed out in search of cats we almost got them but as happens in the Hluhluwe section they disappeared into the thickets before we could get there.

All was not lost as we had great Rhino, Buffalo and then an small breeding herd of Elephants on Gontshi. Stunning.

We returned Catless to discover that during the night there had been a few kills by different prides of lions and visible from the road.

After lunch we headed out to find a Lioness in the Hluhluwe section with an adult female buffalo 3 meters from the road this was amazing. The male had moved off probably to drink water and only returned later.

The funniest thing was to watch someone with there child on his lap drive straight past the sighting! Couldnt believe it.

What a day as we also came across the African Wild Dogs and watched 2 young Male Rhinos confront them and chase them away. There was also giraffe in the road oh it was just pumping animals.

We returned for dinner at Hilltop camp Hluhluwe.

    Great food again thanks C3.

    Bed.

    Day 3: Durban 3 Day Bush Tour/Safari

Breakfast and check out was first on the cards before heading back to the carcass which the Lion had dragged 20 meters across the road into a thicket what a strong beast!

Then we got stuck behind 6 or so bull Elephants. Clearly the car in front of us had no idea how to cope with this so I took the front of the line. Slowing they shifted to browse on the side of the road and were very relaxed and peaceful.

So sadly we had to leave the Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve but we were headinng to ST Lucia or Isimangeliso wetland park.

It was bucketing it down with rain at first but we still saw load of hippos and bird life.

Then after 2 hours of a great Cruise we returned to st lucia for lunch and returned back to Durban where the sun was shining again for us.

What a great Durban 3 Day Safari tour!

Hluhluwe Umfolozi, Cat rehab and St Lucia 4 Day Durban Safari Tour 16-19 September 2013

Well how do you fit 4 days of Safari pictures in just 6 picture slots like above! Its imposible!

We departed Durban on our Big 5 overnight Safari Tour on the 16th September 2013 and headed up to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve the most famous game reserve in Africa.

Day 1. Durban Big 5, 4 Day Safari Tour

was first spent stopping at the cat rehab centre in Hluhluwe for a tour there and cheetah interaction. Then we departed for the game reserve in search of animals.

We just took a straight drive to the lodge but still saw plenty of animals.

After stopping for lunch and checking into Hilltop camp hluhluwe we headed out to see what we could find, the bush (Tour) was pumping with animals and we did really well seeing Rhinos mating among other great things.

We returned to camp after a great drive for dinner.

Day 2- Big 5 Durban 4 Day Safari Tour.

I decided to go looking for Elephants so we began early at 6am and did come across some spoor and dung so we tracked these Elephants for about 6 km until we found them Sadly the had moved away from the road but we did see them. A great first Elephant sighting.

We also saw loads of Rhinos, giraffe, buffalo etc.

After a great breakfast we took a rest before Lunch and we headed back out for a few more hours. We were lucky again as on our way back we found some Elephants mud coming toward the road and the mud Wallowed right near to us. It was great.

Then came the evening game drive and the guests saw Lions, yay.

    Dinner was great.

Day 3 – Durban Big 5, 4 Day Safari Tour

We decided to come for breakfast at 7am and then so a full day Safari Tour which meant we could get down South into the depths of Umfolozi. This turned out to be a 7.5 hour game drive.

We had great luck though. We stopped at Mpafa hide and after 10 minutes of waiting a Lioness with her 2 subadult cubs came to drink. This was amazing. We also discovered that they had stashed a kill 25 meters away from the hide and this made it exciting when leaving the hide. The rule was NO RUNNING!

We also saw giraffe, Zebra, Bufallo, Rhino and heaps of general game like baboons, monkeys, nyala, kudu, duiker, crocodile aswell as Birdlife.

We returned forfilled for a rest before dinner.

Dinner was again great. I also did some star gazing this night with the guests but the full moon really didnt help…

Day 4 of our 4 Day Durban Big 5 Safari Tour

We came down for breakfast and check out before a final 3 hour game drive which was also great. We then departed for St Lucia Estuary or Isimangeliso Wetland park as its now known.

On the Boat cruise we saw loads of Hippos and Crocodiles as well as some bird life.

This being done we headed into town and had some lunch before departing for Durban and final farewell.

Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve 3 day Durban Safari Tour 2-4 September 2013

Another Great Big 5 Safari Tour from Durban.

I collected my clients from two different areas and we then headed up to the Cat rehab centre to interact with cheetah and other endangered species of cat.

Then we headed into Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve taking the direct route to get to lunch. We still saw 3 of the Big 5 in that hour and a half.

    Lunch was needed and great.

We checked in at Hilltop camp and headed back out time gate closure at 6pm. We had great sighting and the best for me was spotting a Lioness at dusk out the corner of my right eye 50 meters off the road. We were so luck as the quickly moved off into the thicket.

We had already seen Buffalo and loads of Rhino, Zebra and Giraffe.

Dinner was great and we ate like kings.

Day 2: Durban 3 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve (Big 5 Safari)

The next day we headed out for a 7 hour game drive to try see what we could find down south in Umfolozi it was pretty Lousy actually. But we did see a few things but sadly no more cats to add to the collection.

We stopped at the centenary centre for lunch and to look at the museum which was great.

Then we headed back to camp after our Durban Safari Tour.

Open vehicle game drive was in the evening and the guests were lucky to add more lions to the list.

Day 3: Durban 3 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve (Big 5 Safari)

The next day we had a nice breakfast with a view and then headed out for a few hours to see what we could find. There was loads out and about and then it was time to go to St Lucia or Isimangeliso Wetland park for the st lucia boat cruise.

We saw loads of Hippos and crocodiles aswell as Birdlife.

Lunch in the small town of st lucia and then back to Durban.

Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve and St Lucia Big 5 safari Tour from Durban 31 – 1 September 2013

Great Big 5 Safari Tour. We began in Durban and headed up to Hluhluwe umfolozi where we tried our very best to find Lions in the heat of the day but without luck. We had huge success though with everything else and this made the tour brilliant.

After watching Elephants and Buffalos drinking in the umfolozi river we made our way up to Hilltop camp for lunch and check in.

Later that day we headed back out and had insane sightings of Rhino, Buffalo, African Wild dog on a male Nyala kill with 6 puppies and load of Giraffe Zebra and the list goes on…

We had to return for dinner and were nearly late back.

Day 2: Durban 3 Day Big 5 Safari Tour.

Dinner was great and then it was time to rest.

An early morning and surprising the Kids were awake.

We went looking for Cats and Dogs…

No Cats but a Black Rhino in full view of the vehicle did the usual – a huff and a puff a few steps towards us and ran away into the thicket this was better than any Lion sighting for me!

Day 3: Durban 3 Day Big 5 Safari Tour.

We had had so much luck this tour it was amazing.

We returned for breakfast and then checked out and raced off to the gate to get to St Lucia.

At St Lucia we saw loads of Hippos and crocodiles aswell as hunting fish eagles and other bird life.

After this it was time for lunch and the fruit market before heading back to Durban City.
