3 Day overnight Big 5 Safari Tour from Durban to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve, Cat rehab and St Lucia Isimangeliso Wetland park 3rd to 5th June 2014.

Day 1 of our  3 Day overnight Big 5 Safari Tour from Durban to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve

We began our Big 5 Durban Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve in Durban City where I collected my Clients some of which had run the Comrades South Africa’s major Ultra marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

I covered the usual things like the history of the area we were entering into and of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The history of Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve is always interesting as well as the Flora and Fauna in Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve.

We made good time and our first stop was a Cat rehabilitation centre outside Hluhluwe Town where you can interact with 4 different species of Cat, namely; Cheetah, Serval, Caracal and African Wild Cat.

The clients were lucky to get the photo taken with these majestic cats. This is always a good start to a 3 Day Durban Safari Tour because even the Big 5 Game reserve of Hluhluwe Umfolozi can at times cause problems with finding big cats, This Tour was not the case though!

After the Cat rehab centre we entered at Memorial gate duly named as there is a grave next to the gate and we began our Hluhluwe Umfolozi safari Tour.

We had immediate success as we got a Zebra crossing the road in front of the vehicle.

We continued a mere 200 meters before we found Elephants and Buffalo crossing the road too. It was like the animals can out especially for us in the heat of the day.

We must have had some good Ora for our Durban Safari Tour to be going so well.

    First was the Buffalo crossing…

After the Buffalo had crossed we drove another 150 Meters and there was a second herd of Elephant crossing the road to the other side so we drove around and waiting on a dirt road for them to come around and the walked in front of us a second time! A great Hluhluwe Umfolozi Safari Tour

We eventually got to Hilltop camp (Hluhluwe) where we began to settle in by having some lunch and checking in. After a great lunch and 40 odd minutes in the rooms we headed back out until gate closure at 6pm.

Our Day’s Safari Tour started with a female Giraffe with what looked like a broken leg and I could feel the mood drop in the vehicle after I said its nature and we don’t interfere. I wish that was always the case…

Our Hluhluwe Umfolozi safari tour continued and we headed out to the Hluhluwe River where we got out at a view site to look over the river at some Buffalo and we also spotted Hippos and a crocodile in the River. This was great! Durban Safari Tours are amazing if you are patient and lucky like we were.

Our Safari Tour continued and we spotted some Nyala females coming to the road and we adjusted the vehicle so they would cross in front of us. Later we also spotted a male Nyala on the Tour in Hluhluwe Section.

As our Hluhluwe Umfolozi safari tour continued we found an amazing sight! A big male white Rhino mud wallowing and then as he got out he rubbed himself for about 20 minutes on a rock which was once a sign. His rubbing became so elaborate that I had got myself some great pictures. See below what a great Rhino, What a great Durban Safari Tour.

After this I was so stoked at what we had seen that I though we could find anything even Lions that had moved away from the road… We spotted more Buffalo and Elephant before I got to this area. It was now dark and we had no chance unless these Lions came onto the road so we continued in the process driving right along side and Elephant in the dark. We moved past him and got back to Hilltop camp (Hluhluwe) after an amazing Day Safari from Durban. We arrived back at camp spot on 6pm and took a rest before dinner.

At dinner I think we were all tired and we rushed our meal down and then headed to bed after a great Hluhluwe Umfolozi Safari Tour from Durban.

Day 2 of our  3 Day overnight Big 5 Safari Tour from Durban to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve, Cat rehab and St Lucia Isimangeliso Wetland park 3rd to 5th June 2014.

The next morning we slept in till 6am and met for a 7 am breakfast before heading down into the Umfolozi section of the Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve to continue our Durban Safari Tour.

We rushed down to save time and only stopped momentarily to look at a young Bull Elephant before a rest room break at Mpila Camp (umfolozi).

After this and a chat with a mate who told me that there were no cats where I was wanting to search, I decided to try another area and bang we came round a bend to a couple cars stopped and a pride of 4 Lions had killed a Wildebeest which the had wrapped around a tree next to the road. The Lions we hiding a big but after 20 minutes of waiting the showed themselves but did not feed on the carcass.

We were so lucky to see these Big cats on our Hluhluwe Umfolozi Safari Tour! We continued and saw a warthog, impala and Zebra only 50 meters from the Lions.

We decided to head to a “Hide” which is a secure area over looking a water point where you can sit quietly and watch what ever comes by. We saw a male Nyala who was beautiful come and drink.

Our Safari Tour of Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve was really going well but became quiet for a while at the sun baked down at 35 degrees Celsius(so much for winter).

We continued our Hluhluwe Umfolozi Safari Tour and spotted some Living Wildebeest, Giraffe, Warthogs and loads of Impalas.

We also stopped to look at a Zebra and her foul near the road.

Lunch was beckoning so we made our way to Centenary centre home of operation Rhino in the 1950s and had some food there. The girls got cause up in the curio shop and there food got cold which was a great laugh…

We had to leave and continue our Hluhluwe Umfolozi Safari Tour and we moved back into the Hluhluwe Section of the reserve where we found 2 male Elephants crossing the road again!

Arriving back we got the tickets for the evening game drive and took a rest before that would take place from 5pm – 8pm.

When my clients returned at 8pm they were cold and hadn’t seen too many new things except Genets and Owls.

It was time for a warm dinner and bed.

Day 3 of our  3 Day overnight Big 5 Safari Tour from Durban to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve, Cat rehab and St Lucia Isimangeliso Wetland park 3rd to 5th June 2014.

We got up at 6am and met before 7am to pack the bags into the vehicle before heading off to have some breakfast at Hilltop camps restaurant.

After breakfast we quickly checked out and made our way out onto the reserve for our last 3 hours of Safari Touring before we would depart for St Lucia – Isimangeliso Wetland Park.

We had some good luck with this big male Elephant right next to the road dust bathing. He wasn’t the least bit interested in us.

After this great sighting we continued to as many view sights overlooking the river as possible it turned out to be a good choice as we came across a Big Elephant bull crossing the Hluhluwe River.

Durban Safari Tours really can be a treat!

Before we left for Isimangeliso Wetland Park the clients wanted to see Giraffe one more time and we nailed it! We got this beautiful old male which slowly walked closer to the road and with a bit of vehicle manipulation we got it to cross in front of us.

After enjoying the Giraffe and spotting a few more species it was time to end our 3rd Day Safari Tour in Hluhluwe Umfolozi and head to Isimangeliso wetland park for a 2 hour boat cruise on the St Lucia Estuary.

We arrived and had to wait for a group of students to arrive which were 30 minutes late(African Time-lol) Once we got going it was a real Safari Tour treat as we spotted Water Monitor Lizards mating as well as Fish eagles! I was so frustrated with myself as I left my camera in the car! So sorry no pictures on that you will just have to trust me!

After the Safari Tour on the Boat at St Lucia Estuary we headed into St Lucia town to get some lunch at Ocean Sizzler which was great as always. They do the best food and the best portions for your money!

We then had to begin the long trip back to Durban and the rain decided it was going to fall which slowed us down a bit. All in all it was a great Hluhluwe Umfolozi safari Tour.

Durban 4 Day Big 5 overnight Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve, Emdoneni Cat Rehab centre and St Lucia Wetlands ( Isimangeliso Wetland Park) – 29th April to the 2nd May 2014.

Day 1: Durban Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi Game reserve

On this Durban Big 5 Overnight Safari Tour we began just outside of Durban.

On Route to the Big 5 Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve I covered most of the major history of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa before covering Hluhluwe Umfolozi History and Early Zulu History.

Before we entered the game reserve we stopped at Emdoneni an endangered cat rehabilitation centre where clients can interact with cheetah and other Cats hands on. It is a great additive to the usual Durban Day Safari Tour or Durban Overnight Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve.

We arrived at Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve at about 12:00 at the Memorial gate where we entered this majestic, scenic game reserve for our Durban Big 5 Safari Tour. Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve is 960 square kilometres in size, home to the Big 5 and the beginning of our Durban Big 5 Safari Tour.

Our Safari sightings began immediately as we stumbled across two White Rhinos, a herd of Buffalo, Giraffe and a Huge Herd of Elephant. This was making our Durban 4 Day Safari Tour experience very interesting… We still had 3 days of Safari to go and had seen 3 of the Big 5 already!

One of our first sightings on our Durban Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi was these Buffalo mud wallowing. The Second of the Big 5 we saw after the Rhinos.

We also came across this young Bull Elephant Dust Bathing on the first drive of our 4 Day Durban Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve. This was now the 3rd of the Big 5 for this Safari Tour!

We made our way to Hilltop camp where we would be spending 3 nights and had lunch before checking into the camp and heading back out for another Safari Tour game drive in Hluhluwe game reserve.

We had a few good sightings but it was quieter than it was in the morning. We did see some Buffalo, White Rhino with her calf and a few other animals.

This Crocodile with at one point had a Terrapin on his back was a great experience for the clients on this Big 5 Safari Tour from Durban. Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve was really keeping us occupied!

Time was moving by fast and we decided to call it a day after the sun set and head back to Hilltop camp for the night. Hilltop camps dinner was great and we went to bed for some shut eye.

On Day 1 of 5 days to have already found 3 of the Big 5 on a Hluhluwe umfolozi safari tour was brilliant!

Hluhluwe Umfolozi Safari Tours are really pumping at the moment and some brilliant sightings of the Big 5.

Day 2: Durban Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi Game reserve

We left Hilltop camp at 7:40am and headed straight down south to the Umfolozi section to look for Cats. We were lucky and saw Elephants again (1st of Big 5 for this day)on about 4 different occasions, Rhino Crossing the road in front of us(second of the Big 5 for this day), a Journey of Giraffe, Baboons, Zebras, Wildebeest, Impala, Nyala, Kudu, Warthog, Buffalo(the 3rd of the Big 5 on this days Safari) and even a Lioness which was not the 4th of the Big 5 to be seen on our Safari Tour from Durban to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve.

Always good to see one of the Big 5 but the Lion was a real bonus.

This was one of my Best moments of the day as a White headed Vulture is one of only about 30 breeding pairs in South Africa. The are so endangered and only found in protected areas like Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve. We were lucky to see one on our Durban 4 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve.

We continued down South and stopped at a view sight looking over the Umfolozi river and spotted a Lioness on the Sand bank. She got up and started to move towards the reeds. A great sighting on our Hluhluwe Umfolozi 4 Day Safari Tour.

We headed from here back up to the Centenary centre home of Operation Rhino in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Here we had a look around the Museum, shop and grabbed a bite to eat.

Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve has been good to us today and we have really seen so much, 4 out of the Big 5 so far on this Durban 4 Day Safari Tour.

We returned to Hilltop camp for a rest and some dinner before a good rest.

Day 3: Durban Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi Game reserve

We headed through for a breakfast at Hilltop camp restaurant and then pushed to get down South for these Lions. We were lucky that there had been a report of 2 Lionesses on the other side of the river bank of the Black Umfolozi River. We made it there on time and saw then resting in the open on the opposite bank.

We were so lucky as we continued on we spotted another Lioness in the river bed at a different location and later on a Cheetah which was lying in the shade under the trees. Our Hluhluwe Umfolozi Big 5 Safari Tour has really heated up at this point!

We also spotted 4 of the Big 5 on this day on our Durban Safari Tour; Lion, Buffalo, Rhino and Elephant. Even Cheetah which was a real bonus.

Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve really is a hidden Gem so close to Durban city. Join us for a Durban Day Safari Tour or Hluhluwe Umfolozi Overnight Safari Tour.

As were continued we spotted and Elephant drinking in the dry river bed by digging the sand away to get to the fresh water below. This top view was great.

On our drive out on our morning Safari Tour before we reached the first sighting of Lions for this day “May Day” we spotted a beautiful male giraffe walking down the road towards us.

We then returned for a late lunch and rested before dinner and bed at Hilltop camp.

Day 4: Durban Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi Game reserve

On our final Day of this Durban Safari Tour we had our breakfast before heading out onto the reserve. Having see what we wanted to see we kept to the northern section and spotted Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino, Giraffe, Zebra and a few other beautiful animals.

We also spotted this Crested Guinea fowl which you don’t see very often the more common one is the Helmeted Guinea Fowl.

We continued on and our time began to expire so we headed out so we could get to St Lucia or Isimangeliso Wetland Park as it is known now.

When we got there we did a 2 hour long boat cruise at this world heritage site and viewed loads of hippos a couple of Crocodiles and some great birdlife.

The views were also great on the Lake St Lucia so I took a picture with Maphelane the Worlds second largest vegetated sand dunes at about 180 meters above sea level.

We all had a really good time and now it was time to head back to Durban with my clients and reminisce about the whole Safari Experience. Some of my favourite moments were the Lions we saw as well as the White Headed Vulture.

Durban Day Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve 5th April 2014

We began our Durban Day Big 5 Safari Tour in Durban city Ethekwini as its known the Zulu word for (By the bay/sea). After meeting my client at the Beverly Hills Hotel we traveled up to the Big 5 Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve for our Durban day Big 5 safari tour.

The Drive up I covered the History of South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal and Durban as well as the different population groups and how they came to be here in the are of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and Hluhluwe Umfolozi. One of the other major things I cover is the Flora and agricultural crops like Sugar Cane and Eucalyptus Siligna  trees we come across on route to the Big 5 game reserve of Hluhluwe Umfolozi.

Today was to be a good day for us all! Even though we didn’t come right with any cats. We had some amazing sightings on our Durban Day Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve.

We were lucky with our sightings and managed 3 of the Big 5 and Elephants on three or 4 different occasions.

Upon arrival at the Nyalazi gate we had a patch of quietness where we only saw a herd of Buffalo in the distance and a few impala but then things began to pick up and we found Wildebeest, White Rhino, Giraffe, Zebra, Warthogs as well as Elephant in the distance.

As our Durban Big 5 Day safari Tour progressed we spotted more and more animals and eventually got a great big male elephant next to the road.

Our first major sighting was these Zebras next to the road on our Safari Tour.

Dazzle of Zebra pose on our Durban Big 5 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve

As we continued our Durban Big 5 Safari Tour we spotted this beautiful crash of Rhinos 5 in total which was on of the Big 5. The really were so striking all lined up a breast.

So with one close up of the Rhino one of the Big 5 we continued where we spotted some lovely giraffe. Our Durban Big 5 Safari Tour was really picking up.

Young Male Giraffe on our Durban Big 5 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve
An other crazy thing happened on our Big 5 Safari Tour from Durban when this young male giraffe mounted the back of a bigger male giraffe.

One this which is important to note is that in Nature there is no such thing as “Gay” animals. Male animals will mount the backs of other males as a sign of dominance and nothing else!

A male Giraffe tries his luck in a dominance Mating display with another bigger male giraffe on our Durban Big 5 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve
After all of this action in the bush on our Safari Tour from Durban we came across this lovely small breeding herd of Buffalo before we stopped for lunch, they were very skittish but stuck around to pose for a photo.

It was now time for lunch and instead of stopping at Hilltop camp hluhluwe we stopped at the centenary center as we had been so far south in the Umfolozi section of the reserve. Centenary center is home to operation Rhino which brought back the White Rhino population from about 60 individuals in the 1950’s and 1960’s to approximately 2300 in Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve and stocked Kruger national park with there White Rhinos now sitting at 4000 individuals approximately.

After lunch we headed back out into the bush to Tour the Northern section, Hluhluwe. We were very lucky as we came across this bull Elephant drinking.

Big Bull Elephant drinks water on our Durban Big 5 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve
In a matter of minutes he had had his fill of about 50 litres of water and showed us another amazing side to an Elephant you will have to see below image. The male part is said to weight about 25 kg’s.
Big Bull Elephant shows us his 5th leg while he defecates on our Durban Big 5 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve

After this rather interesting Bush experience we had to start looking for things quickly as our time was running out on our Durban Big 5 Safari Tour from Durban.

We came across more Elephant and captured this great images of a Golden Orb Spider in the foreground with a Bull Elephant in the back ground. Our Durban day Safari Tour has really heated up and really turned out to be a great Safari Tour in the African bush.

If you wish to experience a part of Durban which few know about contact me and we can arrange a Durban Day or overnight Safari Tour to the Bush-Hluhluwe Umfolozi, Berg-Drakensberg Mountains or the Battlefields- KwaZulu-Natal.

Durban Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve 7 March 2014

We began our Durban Day Safari Tour in Durban city Ethekwini as its known the Zulu word for (By the bay/sea). After meeting my clients at the Blue waters hotel we traveled up to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve for our Durban day safari tour.

The Drive up I covered the History of South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal and Durban as well as the different population groups and how they came to be here in the are of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and Hluhluwe Umfolozi. One of the other major things I cover is the Flora and agricultural crops like Sugar Cane and Eucalyptus Siligna  trees we come across on route to the game reserve of Hluhluwe Umfolozi.

Today was to be a good day for us all! after Wednesdays Safari Tour in the rain it was 36 degrees at its hottest and a beautiful day for a Bush safari Tour.

We were lucky with our sighting and managed 3 of the Big 5 and Elephants on three different occasions.

We began with two male Buffalos wallowing in the mud South west of centenary center turn off.

This Male Warthog in the Umfolozi section of the game reserve was relaxing in the water/mud and hardly moved an inch in the time we watched him. We also came across this some Wildebeest close to where the Zebras were, this was turning out to be a great Safari Tour from Durban.

After waiting for the whole day to get a real close up of an Elephant we got it late in the afternoon before we left Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve for Durban City.

It was a small breeding herd with two little babies and about 5 Adults. They were only 8 meters from the main road and if some idiot hadn’t reved them they would have crossed right in front of us.

This was an amazing Durban Day Safari Tour and Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve keeps living up to it great reputation as being KwaZulu-Natals best kept secret. Durban Day Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve 5th March 2014

After collecting my clients from the Royal hotel in Durban we began our Durban Day Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve Africa’s Oldest!

As usual I spoke of the rich history of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa and Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve itself which is an amazing place. The “operations” in the 1960’s just to bring White Rhinos back from extinction speak loud words on what Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve has done for conservation since 1895 when its was established!

Taking a Big 5 Safari Tour should never be a excuse to assume that you will see everything you wish to see and today really proved that. After expecting the rain to stop so that we could have a chance at seeing animals come out to remark there territory, it just kept raining. So our sighting we very hard to come about and not the clearest.

Having said the above we did see 2 Of the Big 5 and other animals : Rhino, Buffalo, Giraffe, Impala, Nyala, Warthog, a Giant legless skink, Wildebeest, Waterbuck and lots of Elephant dung but no Elephant… We even got tracks of Hyena and Wild dogs but we were to late. They say life is all about timing and I agree…

A Safari Tour from Durban in the Rain at Hluhluwe Umfolozi:

Giraffe in the Rain at Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve on our Durban Safari Tour 5th March 2014

The pictures above show some of the Giraffe we managed to find on the Safari Tour from Durban. The Bottom image of a male Giraffe shows a wound on his head and the red billed oxpecker cleaning it up. Very often they do more damage by opening the wound and preventing it from healing but this chap didn’t mind at all. Just one of the little surprises Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve spits out at you every so often.

Rhino and Wildebeest at Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve on our Durban Day Safari Tour 5th March 2014

These Rhinos on of the Big 5 were seen laying in the mud about 60 meters from the road and the Wildebeest 5 meters from the road with some vervet monkeys. Sadly we didn’t get a closer sighting of the Rhinos than this but that is nature for you, you are never guaranteed anything. Considering it was raining I think we did alright on the Safari Tour from Durban city.

Male Nyala and a female Waterbuck in Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve on our Durban Day Safari Tour

Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve Safari Tours always show interesting things. This Day Safari Tour we got to see this male Nyala clash horns with another male over the right to mate with females. It was very exciting as it was 15 meters off the road an the clash of horns could be heard almost like gun shots. They continued to wonder around each other with hair stood up on neck and back (philo-erection) as its known. Very cool sighting in the rain at Hluhluwe Umfolozi.

This female water buck which is dependent on water was looking down at the river in flood and probably was really happy she didnt have to walk far for water…

Oh the wonders of the African Bush (Tours) never a dull moment even when its raining.

So after departing from Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve we headed back to Durban City in the comfort of the vehicle after an interesting but wet Durban Day Safari Tour.

Maybe you should join Tim Brown Tours on a Durban Day or overnight Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve.

Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve – Durban Day Safari Tour 5/2/14

We began our Durban Day Safari Tour in just outside of Durban in Umhlanga the Zulu word for Reeds. After meeting my clients at Zimbali Lodge we traveled up to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve for our day safari tour.

The Drive up I covered the History of South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal and Durban as well as the different population groups and how they came to be here in the are of Durban and Hluhluwe Umfolozi. One of the other major things I cover is the Flora and agricultural crops like Sugar Cane and Eucalyptus Siligna  tree we come across on route to the game reserve of Hluhluwe Umfolozi.

Today was to be a special day for us all!

White Rhino in the Mud of Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve – Durban Day Safari Tour 5/2/14

White Rhino resting in the mud on a hot sunny day in Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve

After spending more than an hour having only seen Impala, Warthog and Wildebeest we found this big Fella a Male White Rhino in the mud. It was already 34 degrees Celsius so I don’t blame him. Mud wallowing is common among some species of animals for a few reasons: one of which is to remove external parasites off there bodies ie Ticks. – For more information you will have to take a Durban Day Safari Tour with Tim Brown Tours!

Giraffe in Hluhluwe Umfolozi on our Durban Day Safari Tour

Giraffe in Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve on our Durban Day Safari Tour

At the same mud wallow we found about 5 giraffe browsing on the acacia leaves as well as Zebra, Wildebeest, Warthog and Impala. All of sudden it was like a Zoo full of animals surrounding the one watering hole with very little water. Giraffe are independent of water and do not need to drink unless they feel perfectly safe to do so. To get more interesting fact again you will have to come on a Durban Day Safari Tour with Tim Brown Tours.

Young Lioness on the Rocks at Mphafa hide parking lot Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve

Young Lioness on the Rocks at Mphafa hide parking lot Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve

A bit further up the road this was a real treat on our Durban Day Safari Tour. To find Lions during the Day is hard enough considering the are nocturnal but this was special for a few reasons.

We went down to Mphafa hide in the Umfolozi section of the reserve and I had told the clients I was just going to get out in the parking lot to check it was safe before they joined me in the walk to the “hide” which over looks a watering hole.

I got out and took one step and heard a growl and the grass rustle, when I looked up there was a young male Lion staring at me about 15 meters away and he began to wander off away from us. – These are common warning signs not to come any closer! I obviously jumped back into the vehicle and showed the clients the Lion. All of a sudden another 4 or 5 Lionesses began showing themselves from there hiding spot in the rocks next to the hide. This was super amazing and we got some good photos of them getting comfortable again. – Only on a Hluhluwe umfolozi Durban Day Safari Tour with Tim Brown Tours.

Cheetah mother and cub on our Durban Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve

Our Durban Day Safari Tour only got better as we spotted a mother cheetah and her cub(left) resting under a tree. I told my clients I hadn’t seen a cheetah for 6 month which shows how rare this sighting was! To find two different Cat species on a Day Safari Tour is like liquid gold. We had hit the jackpot…

We headed off in high spirits to see if we could find Buffalo a bit closer as well as Elephants and of course to have some lunch.

After lunch this is what we came across.

Red Elephant in Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve on our Day Safari Tour
Red Elephant in Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve on our Day Safari Tour

This was a great sighting although we had spotted two other Bull Elephants this was was 10 meters from the road and had be rolling around in a red clay based soil to cool down so he looked so red! You can see how beautiful his long eyelashes are and that he is flapping his ears to cool his body temperature down. A fantastic sighting having now seen 4 of the Big 5 and cheetah which is so rare we were very happy and lucky.

It was time for the Buffalo and true to form I headed up to Keiths pan in the hope that we would find some there and we sure did, we must have seen about 50 individual African/Cape Buffalo in the mud just before we had to exit the reserve on our Durban Day Safari Tour.

To conclude a great Day Safari Tour from Durban this picture of a Buffalo Bull chewing the cud was great apart from the grass that blew in front of his face.

If you are reading this post and are not envious of these great Durban Safari Tours we have to offer I would be very surprised. Durban Day Safari Tour can be just a good as and overnight safari tour from Durban.

Hluhluwe Umfolozi Day Safari Tour 21st January 2014

This Safari Tour was really a great experience for all my clients. After collecting them from Durban we headed to the Umfolozi section of the Hluhluwe Umfolozi reserve. On route I covered the History of Durban, History of KwaZulu Natal and the History of South Africa.

It was a lovely hot sunny day in Hluhluwe umfolozi and we were all happy to have the air-conditioner running.

Elephant in Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve drinking water

Elephant drinking water from the Black Umfolozi river in Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve

One of our first major sighting in Umfolozi was this Bull Elephant having a Drink in the river there were also two Cape Buffalo bulls resting in the water behind him. Before this we had seen Impala, Wildebeest and Zebra but this was the first of our Big 5 Sightings!

Later we continued to find a Male Giraffe and a mother and Calf White Rhino at one of the pans in the Umfolozi section of the reserve.

Giraffe and Rhinos hanging out at a pan in the Umfolozi section of the game reserve

Giraffe and Rhinos hanging out at a pan in the Umfolozi section of the game reserve

We only had a short time to look at these great animals as someone very kindly told us of some Lions at Bhekaphanzi Pan a bit further down the road from where we were, so of course I wasn’t going to miss out even for myself! We sped off and found 2 Lionesses and 1 Sub adult Male Lion resting under an acacia tree right next to the water. What made this even more exciting was the fact that a Bull elephant came along and had a drink lucky for the Lions he didn’t see or smell them otherwise the would have been chased away! Umfolozi section of Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve this time of the year is a better place to look for the Cats during the day! My clients were really happy and so was I!

After leaving this great sighting we decided to head back to Centenary Center home to Operation Rhino in the 1960’s where Rhinos where brought back from extinction. We had some lunch there before continuing into the Hluhluwe Section of the reserve to see what else we could find. On our way up into the northern section (Hluhluwe) we found Kudu and Nyala which we hadn’t seen yet!

When we got nearing the exit gate of Memorial we found a huge herd of Buffalo, Zebra and Giraffe as well as Vervet monkeys and Baboons before we exited the reserve to head back to Durban.

After a great day of Game viewing in the game reserve of Hluhluwe and Umfolozi we departed feeling content at what great animals we had seen on this beautiful day in the African Bush.

After collecting my clients off the Cruise ship in Richards bay we heading up to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve for a very rushed but still successful Durban Day Safari Tour.

We were able to find Rhino, Buffalo (far away), Elephant, Giraffe, warthogs, Impala coming out of our ears! and one of the coolest sightings was this Spotted eagle owl just chilling next to some Rhinos as the grazed the grass in the late afternoon.

We also got some Wildebeest, baboon and Vervet monkeys but other than the mentioned we did not come right with the cats.

Having said that it was a very hot day mid 30 degrees Celsius.

Having covered the History of the area aswell the job was complete and the clients seemed to have enjoyed the rushed tour around the African bush.

Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve 3 Day Durban Safari Tour 19 -21 December 2013

After collecting my clients from Durban having just flown in the night before from New York they were surprisingly not tired! So we began our Big 5 Durban Safari Tour!

I chatted about the History of the area and there questions were welcome and helped make the 3 hour drive to the game reserve go quickly.

We entered at Nyalazi gate and went in search of cats. Surprisingly we nailed it and got a Lion and Lioness at one of the pans. We also saw Elephants, Rhino, Buffalo, giraffe, Zebra, Warthogs and loads of other animal on the first drive.

We stopped for a late lunch at the Centenary center and then continued to see what we could find on a rush to get out at memorial gate to get to emdoneni for there 16:30 Tour of the Cat rehab center. I think we just saw too much and that made us 10 minutes late.

Straight onto the tour and I did the check in. We met after the Safari Tour and the clients had enjoyed it but preferred the natural reserve (I dont blame them).

It was a short rest before a great Steak for dinner and bed.

    Day 2:

we got up very early and left the lodge at 04:40 to get to the gate to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve by 5am. We spent the whole day in the reserve arriving back at camp at 18:30. We covered so much this day and we were all so tired but it had been worth getting up early.

Dinner was welcome and so was the bed.

    Day 3:

another early start with a packed breakfast and we were in the reserve at 5am. We drove and had our 3rd sighting of Lions in the 3 days aswell as getting more Elephant sightings this was welcome.

We then departed for St Lucia(Isimangeliso Wetland Park) and had a great 2 hours on the boat with loads of Hippo Sighting before an ok lunch at a local restaurant. Bunny chow was the order of the day and apart from the bone was not bad,

Durban was now our next destination and we stopped at the airport to pick up a rental car for the clients. We said our good bys and it was home.

A great Durban Safari tour with a great couple, Thank you Kyle and Sonya for being such sports especially with the elephant dung and fever tea!

Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve Durban Day Safari Tour 9 December 2013

A great day in the African Bush. I met my clients in Durban City and we began the long drive to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve which went fast as questions were asked and the History flowed.

Once we got to Nyalazi gate we entered and went South looking for Lions actually but we didnt find any lions! We were more blessed and found a Big male Leopard about 15-20 meters from the road and he just gave me one heck of a death start. A Leopards Eyes can penetrate a humans soul and you will never forget it!

The picture on the bottom right is the best picture I could get as he started to move away behind the thicket and long grass. It was a special sighting!

We continued on with spirits high and found Buffalo, Giraffe by the dozen, Zebra, Wildebeest, terrapins, Impala, Nyala, Vervet Monkeys, Rhinos and of Course Elephants!

So a good day was turned into a great one by this beautiful Leopard who’s Eyes penetrated our souls.

After all this excitement we stopped for lunch to get rid of the dizziness of the driving and concentrating all day. Lunch was good and we headed back out we didnt see much at the rain began to fall but some buffaloes and Rhinos.

On the drive back to Durban the mood was light and we all just chatted about many different topics which made the drive to Durban feel so much shorter.

Thanks to my clients: Awais, Seemas and Aisha
