Durban Big 5 Private Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Big 5 Game reserve 28th June 2014

We began our Big 5 Private Durban Day Safari Tour to the Big 5 Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve in Durban City where I collected my Clients who were here for business. I covered the usual things like the history of the area we were entering into and of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The history of the world famous Big 5 Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve is always interesting as well as the Flora and Fauna in Hluhluwe Umfolozi Big 5 Game reserve.   We made good time and our first stop was at North coast plaza to get coffee.   After this short stop to rest we entered at the Nyalazi Gate of the Big 5 Umfolozi Game reserve.   These Big 5 Game reserve can be misunderstood as being a guaranteed sighting of the Big 5 but this is not the case as animals roam freely in an area of 960 Square Kilometers. We were lucky and had immediate success as we got a Kudu near the road.

We continued on the main road and we found Elephants in the valley between the airstrip and Masinda lodge. Our Durban Private Big 5 Day Safari Tour was hoting up! It was like the animals can out especially for us in the heat of the day!   We must have had some good vibes for our Durban Safari Tour to be going so well.

After the Elephants we got a small bachelor herd of Buffalo crossing the road in front of us and the really posed for us. This was becoming a great Big 5 Hluhluwe Umfolozi Private Safari Tour.

Our Big 5 Hluhluwe Umfolozi Day Safari Tour continued and we headed down South deep into the Umfolozi section of the reserve where we would attempt to find cats. We didn’t have very much luck at first but then made our way to Bhejane Hide. On route we spotted a Journey of Giraffe and some Zebra.

At Bhejane hide we spotted Warthogs drinking and mud wallowing as well as some Baboons. The one Male had just had sex with one of the females and was resting. We were lucky to see this twice on our Durban Big 5 Private Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Big 5 Game reserve.

Our Durban Big 5 Day Safari Tour continued and we spotted a Male Cheetah walking up a ridge and scent marking on the trees, he even rolled over in the dust before disappearing out of sight.

As our Hluhluwe Umfolozi Big 5 Day safari tour continued we found some wildebeest resting near the road and even a Puff Adder which we nearly hit with the car. I reversed to show the client the beautiful markings and the short fat nature of the snake.

Our amazing Durban Private Big 5 Day Safari from Durban had really turned out well and we hadn’t even had lunch yet! We made our way to the Centenary centre home of operation Rhino and looked at an old carcass of a Buffalo which was killed a week ago by Lions.   We also saw some Zebras crossing the road which was great. After we got some lunch and had a look around the shop our Day Big 5 Safari Tour from Durban was coming to an end. Hluhluwe Umfolozi Big 5 Game reserve had been a good host for us and still had a couple things to show us.   We started to head to the gate and saw some Giraffe trying to cross the road as well as some baboon again playing. We got to see the big male give one of his wives some action and then it was time to finally head out of Hluhluwe Umfolozi Big 5 and Malaria free game reserve.

The long drive back to Durban City was made easier by having seen so much great things and experiencing the wonders that the Big 5 Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve has to offer. Although a Durban Day Safari Tour to this Big 5 game reserve is not ideal to maximise game viewing it is a lot better than not going on a Durban Day Safari Tour at all!   Join Tim Brown Tours on your next visit to South Africa we can arrange the best possible experience for any time frame and ensure you leave South Africa – Durban with a lifetime of memories.

Thanks Tim for an experience I will not forget. I especially enjoyed listening to the history of KZN and you made it more interesting when listening to you speaking Zulu. The animals were all out for us the other day, and it was more than what we had expected.

I hope to return and experience a different side of the tour, perhaps the overnite camping or the bushwalking safari.

Thanks so much & all the best.
