    Durban safari tour

I met my polish clients in Durban who were here for the World forestry conference and we began our two day Durban safari tour to Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve.

After covering the usual history of Durban, KwaZulu Natal and how all the population groups came to be here we stopped for some coffee. We then continued on to the Cat rehabilitation center where we would be interacting with Cheetah hands on as well as looking at Serval, Caracal and African wild cat, species that are listed as either endangered or threatened.

This Caracal was just staring at the guide while he was explaining about the cats history’s and how they came to be at the project.

Once we had enjoyed this we made our way to the Big 5 and world famous Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve. Once we entered the gate it was game time for me and I had be make sure I was in top form to see what animals I could find for my clients.

In the national parks like Hluhluwe Imfolozi there is no guarantee of seeing the Big 5 but we always try and find as many of them as we can. The cats are always the hardest and they give me the biggest headache.

It was quiet at first but we did spot Rhino, Buffalo, Zebra, Nyala, Impala and Warthogs in our first hour before stopping for lunch.

Our best sighting was these Zebra near the road.

I am looking at this picture now and thinking “They are all in a straight line almost on the road, awesome!”

So this was a good sighting and we then arrived at Hilltop camp for some lunch and to check in before heading back out to see what we could find from 15:30.

It was usual but annoying that every animal we saw was hiding or sleeping until 5pm and then we began to spot better sightings of animals. Before this point we had spotted Monkeys and Baboons.

The sightings got really go and we spotted Buffalo and Rhino together and had great sightings of Rhino mothers with calves as well as big bulls and even young male and female Rhino together. It was starting to become a good Durban safari tour.

The God were now looking down on us favorably and we hit the jackpot! I cant remember the last time I saw 3 of the Big 5 all in one area and this quality of a sighting.

We had two Rhino cross the road in front of us after they had mud wallowed and then we spotted Lions resting! I could not believe our luck. Then as we were enjoying the Lions I spotted Elephants coming to drink.

We got a great picture of this one young Lion who reminded me of Hashim Amla or Moeen Ali cricket players with big beards.

This was amazing and the sun was going down so it was getting more difficult for photos but we moved back to look at the Elephants and they were amazing! we had about 3 tiny babies and over all about 13 Elephants.

This young female Elephant decided to drain her bowls on the road in front of us which is perfectly normal even the queen of England has to do the same thing!

We enjoyed these Elephants and then had one more look at the Lions as the sun was almost gone and really thanked our lucky stars that so Tim Brown magic showed up at the right time! I was nervous for a while there!

We started to hurry back to camp for the gate cut off time and on route spotted a Buffalo bull on the road! Sadly the pictures in the dark we not good so I did not put them up.

We arrived back at Hilltop camp and had a short rest before dinner. Dinner was a lovely affair with the Staff coming and singing and dancing for us which I think my clients really enjoyed. It always adds a special touch.

I also pointed out the Southern cross and showed my clients how to find South before I went off to bed. My clients would be doing the morning open vehicle game drive at 5am and kindly let me sleep in so I could catch up on this blog post and the one before this.

    Day 2: Durban safari tour

After waking early and getting some work done I met my clients for breakfast before packing luggage into the vehicle and checking out.

We would still have time before our tour at St Lucia estuary to view Hippos and crocodiles.

As we departed Hilltop camp for day 2 of your Durban safari tour we managed to find Giraffe a few times.

We then had another amazing thing happen before we could leave the game reserve of Hluhluwe Imfolozi and it was Lions again and they were the tree climbing Lions of Hluhluwe. Unbelievable!

I could not believe our luck, It was a stinking hot day already at 35 degrees and these Lions were moving around the branches of a Marula tree on our Durban safari tour.

We watched this young male Lion get frustrated with the Lioness which kept standing and sitting on him and as it was so hot he was not in a good mood.

We had a lovely picture of these Lions in the tree they looked very beautiful in the tree.

It had been another crazy morning in Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve on safari from Durban and we now had to leave to get to St Lucia for our 12 o clock boat cruise.

I put on the air conditioner as it was so hot and most of my clients had a rest before we arrived at St Lucia. It was here we took a 2 hour Hippo and Crocodile boat cruise on the St Lucia estuary which is South Africa’s first world heritage site.

We spotted many pods on Hippos and some Crocodiles as well as bird life.

It was so hot that we were glad to be on the lower deck away from the blazing sunshine.

We managed to find Hippos also play fighting.

We had a great time and now it was time for a late lunch and then to head back to Durban. Lunch was great and we all enjoyed some good food. We arrived back in Durban with a drop of 13 degrees! But we were all very happy with how our 2 day Durban safari tour had gone.

    Hluhluwe Imfolozi safari

I met my clients for their Hluhluwe Imfolozi safari 2 days safari in Umhlanga(Durban) and we made our way to the world famous Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve. On route we would stop at the cat rehabilitation centre to interact with Cheetah hands on as well as a couple of other endangered wild cats.

We had a great start as we chatted about the history of the area and then stopped for some coffee and a rest before we would arrive at our first destination for this 2 day Durban safari.

The cat rehabilitation centre was amazing and my clients really enjoyed the interaction with the big and small cats.

We then departed the Cat rehabilitation center for Hluhluwe Imfolozi Big 5 game reserve. It was hear our safari would really begin. It was a hot day at 30 degrees and a little humid. This added to the atmosphere and we had some amazing sightings in the first hour and a half before we got to the Hilltop camp for lunch.

In this time we spotted 3 of the Big 5, Rhino, Buffalo and Elephants as well as other smaller species of animal.

The Big 5 is what most people want to come and see so we were lucky with the start we had.

It wasn’t long before we spotted some Rhino near to the road and we got a great few photos to add to the collection.

It was not time to get back to the lodge for the clients open vehicle game drive and it was here that I got some time to write this. I would meet my clients again at 8pm for dinner and as it was only a 2 day safari we planned to head out very early at 6 am the next day to see what we could find.

After a good night sleep we met at 6am and began day 2 of our Hluhluwe Imfolozi safari.

    Day 2: Hluhluwe Imfolozi safari

It was a 6am start and and we were all a little tired after a long day before but all very happy at the prospect of seeing more animals and experiencing another great day on safari in Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve.

Our first major sighting was of these amazing Giraffe on and next to the road. The big male was testing all the female urine to see if they were ready to be mated.

After this amazing sighting and the first Giraffe we has seen we continued further south in the quest to find more Lions.

We found some Leopard tracks and scat but no cat but it was fine and we continued spotting Zebra, Rhino and Nyala before finding a lovely herd of Elephant after the Umfolozi river crossing the road in front of us.

We were running out of time now and the day was getting hot so we headed back to the Umfolozi river and were very lucky to spot four bull Elephants that went to have a drink at the river as well as a sand bath.

After another amazing sighting of Elephants we made our way towards the gate and it was now time to head off to St Lucia – Isimangaliso wetland park.

We took a breather and then we were there at South Africa’s first world heritage site. It is one of the only places you can find Hippos, Crocodiles and Sharks in the same waters.

We first had lunch and then we head to the St Lucia estuary for our 2 hour boat cruise.

Our Cruise was awesome and we saw lots on Hippos and crocodile.

On route we stopped for some coffee and to stretch the legs before we covered our final questions and arrived back in Umhlanga near Durban.

Big 5 safari from Durban for 2 days

I met my clients in Durban for their Big 5 safari just outside Durban to Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve which is world famous for its Rhino breeding success through the 1950’s.

We are truly blessed to have such an amazing Big 5 game reserve near Durban which in my opinion is just as good if not better than Kruger national park.

Kruger National park may be bigger but it is not as scenic as Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve one of the main features all my clients point out!

As usual I covered the History of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa on route to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi national park as well as anything we saw through Zululand.

As we got further into Zululand we stopped at a Cat rehabilitation center to enjoy some interaction with 4 species of endangered cats, the most exciting being Cheetah!

My client of course loved it being big cat fans.

The Servals are very relaxed and also great to interact with so the above picture if of one of the Serval we interacted with. All this cats are here for either breeding or interaction due to some issue which prevents them from being released into the wild. The idea is to try and get as many of them back to the wild where they belong if not they are used as an educational tool to highlight there situation.

We then left and arrived in Hluhluwe Imfolozi Big 5 game reserve not 3 hours from Durban and began our 2 day safari tour.

Our first sighting was of Nyala and Warthogs.

I was a little concerned as it had been a bit quiet in the national park in the past few days but that would not stop us having good sightings!

We spotted Giraffe and Zebra in the distance so I made our way closer and we had the most amazing sighting where we had a troop of Baboons, Zebra, Giraffe and Rhino cross the road in front of us! It was amazing so at this point we had see the first of the Big 5 animals the Rhino but it seemed like we had seem so much more which we had!

I made a good video of the Rhino crossing and then later got a great photo of a male Giraffe near to the road.

It had been a great start and it was time to head to Hilltop camp for some lunch, check in and head back out for more animals.

We enjoyed the Giraffe for a while and moved on to Hilltop camp for some lunch.

We were as quick as we could be as my clients also wanted to do the open vehicle safari at 5pm-8pm with the lodge which meant for me I needed to find as many animals as possible in the afternoon.

Our first sighting in the afternoon as some Nyala and then some Baboons all over the road grooming themselves.

We tried to check all the view points over the Hluhluwe river to see if we could add to our Big 5 list with Elephant but we had no luck. We did find a few Red Duiker and one new born which was very cute, sadly I missed the photo so got the adult instead.

It was time to begin our way back to Hilltop camp but before we could get there we managed to add lots more Rhino and a herd of Buffalo to our Big 5 safari list.

We had now seen 2 of the Big 5 on our safari from Durban and the clients got on to the evening game drive before we met again at 8pm for dinner. I was surprised as when they returned they had not been too luck so had not added any more of the Big 5 to the list which meant I had huge stress to find Cats and Elephants the other 2 major ones of the Big 5 were were missing. The Leopard which would be the 5th of the Big 5 we try and think of it as a bonus as we see it so rarely.

After a great dinner it was time for bed and we were all exhausted after a long day.

Day 2: Big 5 safari from Durban

We met before 7am and got all luggage in the vehicle before having a quick breakfast and making our way as far down south in Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve as the 3.5-4 hours we had would allow us.

This would be a pure crazy day as we just had such luck!

As we had our way down south we ignored Rhino, Buffalo in the distance and most other things it the quest to find Elephant and Cats.

We did have to stop for this sighting of Giraffe and Zebra though!

We didn’t have to continue much further before we spotted our Elephants but they were far away and it did not make for the best picture. Minutes after we spotted another 2 Elephant and then another 2! Again pretty far away but we now had 3 of the Big 5 on our Durban safari.

As we continued on we headed over the Umfolozi river and saw nothing but on the other side I bumped into a friend of mine Marumo who is involved in research. She said that 10 minutes before there was Lions in the river bed. I though we may as well turn back and check from a view point and there they all were all 14 of these amazing Lions! We now had 4 of the Big 5 on our Durban safari and were very happy with that. I had to put up another picture with a couple of big males in it to share with you all.

We must have spent 15-20 minuted watching them and knew we still needed to try find Elephants closer but I think in our hearts we were all content having seen 4 of the Big 5 during our Safari from Durban.

We battled and only found everything else except the Elephants close. We got one good sighting of Zebra though!

We made our way to the gate to head to St Lucia estuary for our 2 hour boat cruise to see Hippos and Crocodiles as well as some Bird Life. It was an hour drive and we said farewell to Hluhluwe Imfolozi Big 5 game reserve and hello to Isimangaliso Wetland park.

We stopped for some lunch in St Lucia town which was lovely before the boat cruise on the St Lucia estuary.

Our cruise went very well we saw Hippos galore, Crocodiles, Birds and even a baby Hippo new born and its mother out the water.

I was really fortunate to have filmed this and it was amazing watching the young Hippo head into the water with its mother and have her display by opening her mouth.

We had a great look at couple of Crocodiles which was great and after seeing 4 of the Big 5 on our Durban safari to see Hippos and Crocodiles is always a treat!

One of my favorite pictures from the St Lucia boat cruise was the this one below where I managed to have the good fortune of lining up 2 or 4 Hippos heads in a row.

We had a great 2 hours at St Lucia on the boat and it was not time to head back to Durban and say goodbye after sharing some great memories.

    Durban 2 day safari tour – 23rd – 24th February 2015

We began our 2 day safari tour from Durban in the big city where I collected my clients from their hotel. We drove for an hour and a half before a pit stop and in this time I covered some of the major history of Durban, KwaZulu Natal and South Africa.

When we continued I covered a bit more and then we arrived at the Cat rehabilitation centre in Hluhluwe called Emdoneni. Here we took a guided tour around the rehab and interacted with 4 endangered species of cat namely the African wild cat, Serval, Caracal and Cheetah.

It seemed the cats were quite relaxed today and all of them were resting even though it was only 29 degrees.

The Serval were great fun as well until one of the other clients there left the gate open between enclosures and Gerry had a hard time of trying to get one of the cats back.

We then departed the Cat rehab centre and made our way the last 20 minutes to Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve the oldest protected area in Africa.

Here we entered and had immediate luck in spotting Buffalo and Zebra.

The Buffalo were crossing the road and some in a mud wallow so we watched them for a while before moving on with our Durban safari tour.

Then one of my clients spotted something on a hill under a tree and we looked to see what it was and it was a pair of Giraffe resting in the shade of a tree. It was a great spotting!

We moved on to get to Hilltop camp for some lunch and had one move very cool sighting of a huge herd of Buffalo in the mud and some Vultures feeding off a carcass.

This was an amazing start to our 2 day Durban safari tour.

We then made our way round to Hilltop camp and my clients were blown away by the view as it is really beautiful. After some good food and a quick check in I got my clients to their room for a rest before we would meet again at 4pm for a game drive to see what else we could find.

At 4pm we headed back out and half an hour where it was very quiet. The great thing was this was to change fast!

We spotted some Elephants on a hill in the distance and we watched them for a short while before we continued on our Durban safari tour.

Next we spotted a White Rhino which was heading towards the road so with a bit of time he crossed and marked his territory on the road in front of us. It was great to see him do this.

The next amazing sighting was of an African fish eagle in flight usually a pain to get a good photo of but I got it and was pretty happy with the photo.

We actually then spotted a Lioness down by the river but she was a flat cat so we moved on after a while and decided to return later when the sun was on its way down. Before we got back we spotted our Elephants again a bit closer and relocated Giraffe from the morning.

What a great Durban safari tour this was turning out to be! We also spotted some Baboons grooming themselves on the road and they looked so funny as they cleaned each other!

It was time to return to our Lions and we got there just before it was to dark for photos and saw them actually 4 of them resting now with their heads up looking at us every so often.

This really was a special day in Africa on a Durban safari tour.

On route back to the lodge in the dark we spotted a Hyena which was on the road and was huge it must have been a female as they are much bigger than males. Unfortunately the photos didn’t come out in the dark so we just headed back to camp where we settled in for some dinner and a well deserved rest.

Day 2: Durban 2 day safari tour of Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve.

We began our second day with some lovely breakfast before checking out and heading to an area we had not been to yet.

On route to the south we found some great sights one of which was these Rhinos on our Durban safari tour.

I almost forgot this amazing sighting of a Half Collared Kingfisher which we saw at one of the river crossing as we were trying so hard to find a monitor lizard for one of my clients Miska.

The picture came out beautifully on this Durban safari tour in Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve.

Next was a great sighting of Zebra in an open plain with two young fouls which were relaxing with their mothers feeding on the grass. It was great to watch them as they were eating the tops of the grass which is exactly what these amazing creatures do.

Seeing Zebras on our Durban safari tours is always great as it is one of the animals that clients love to see.

We then moved on spotting some Impala and Nyala before finding some amazing Giraffe, they were close to the road and after 10 minuted the actually crossed the road so we could enjoy their beauty. They are such graceful animals and everyone of my client had them at the top of their list to see on a Hluhluwe Imfolozi safari tour.

We continued down into the Umfolozi section of the game reserve and found that their was Lions in a tree just near the gate. The only problem was the distance it was so far that even in a full zoom on my good little camera it was not easy to see!

Hluhluwe has these tree climbing Lions which are amazing it is not common behaviour for adult lions to climb trees.

It was not time to depart Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve and begin the hour long trip to St Lucia wetland – Isimangeliso wetland park east of the game reserve. Isimangeliso wetland park is more than 3 x the size of Hluhluwe Imfolozi. It is huge!

When we arrived we popped into the town so that one of my clients could buy a new camera and also to do a spot of shopping at the craft markets.

After we were done we got onto the Santa Lucia boat and cruised the estuary to view hundreds of  Hippos and a couple of Crocodiles. This is always a hit with the clients on our Durban safari tours.

One of the best sightings for me was this Giant Kingfisher siting in a White Mangrove tree on the shoreline! They are such large birds and feed almost entirely on fish.

So this was not the end of what had been an amazing 2 day Durban safari tour and we only had to have some lunch in St Lucia town before heading the 2.5 hours back to Durban where I dropped my happy clients off at their hotel.

Durban 2 day safari tour to Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve 29-30 December 2014

We began our 2 day Durban safari tour in Pinetown a western suburb of Durban and on route I chatted to my clients about the amazing history of Durban, KwaZulu Natal and South Africa.

The time went quickly and before we knew it we were in Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve and enjoying sunshine after we had been expecting rain. Admittedly we had once small shower of rain when we were watching some Zebra but then it cleared and we had a great day.

Our first major sighting after the Zebra and Impala was this Giraffe which David did very well to spot!

We continued further south in the game reserve and just kept getting really good sightings. One of them was 3 Rhinos mud wallowing so I took a few photos but really liked this one of a baby Rhino in the mud looking so cute. Our Durban safari tour was beginning to unravel very nicely for us!

As we continued our Durban safari tour in Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve we came across a Big bull Elephant and this was very well spotted by Shereen! I was impressed!

We waited for this big guy to move out from under the tree and after 5 minuted we got him crossing the road in front of us! It was a brilliant sighting for us all.

At this point we thought we were nailing these animals and that we were on a role! We were another 30 minutes into the day and we hit the jack pot! Lions!

I could not believe our good fortune as it was a pride of Lions feeding on the remains of a Wildebeest and they had 5-6 month old cubs with them. At this point we though their was no way it could get any better! What a Durban safari tour.

Moments later a herd of Buffalo bulls came running in at the Lions and they all scattered cubs and all! Watch this video of what happened!

Video of Lions being flushed by Buffalo on our Durban safari tour.

It was now crazy not only with cars, but a bull Elephant came down the road towards us as we were trying to relocate the lions! We got to a junction in the road and this Elephant bull which was also in Musth continued down towards us. I drove up the hill and turned around to check on him and he had now moved off the road.

We then returned to the Lions to find cubs crossing the road and separated from their mothers, mother calling to their cubs so on and so forth!

We spotted one female Lion crossing the road to meet up with her cub and bring her back to the pride. It was amazing!

At this point we had been spoiled so we got past the traffic and made our way round the bend where the Elephant had come from. We then spotted a male lion under a tree but he was so well tucked away the picture was really bad so I left it out!

By now we were getting hungry and we were all so happy with seeing 4 of the Big 5 in one morning that we just made our way back round the dirt road loops to the lunch stop at Centenary center.

Before we could get to lunch we spotted some Baboons playing and drinking at the Umfolozi river.

We all had some good food before continuing out of the game reserve to Emdoneni cat rehab center for the tour there.

My client were sure nothing could make the day any better and then they brought out the baby Cheetah!

Things on our Durban safari tour just kept getting better. We then went into the Cheetah adult enclosure where my clients could interact with Cheetah hands on! So now they had touched Cheetah cubs of 3 months old and 6 year old male Cheetahs.

We then got to watch the Caracal jump to get its food and man David got a crazy slo mo video of the whole thing it was actually freakishly good!

While we were with the Caracal we spotted a little Caracal cub hiding in a Buffalo thorn Acacia!

We left the Caracal and moved on to interact with the Serval. I managed to get a great photo of one of the Serval in the tree.

At this point we were all so tired but also to happy with how the day had gone and to think we still had 1 more day of our Durban safari tour left was kinda crazy!

We made our way to the Protea hotel in Hluhluwe where we checked in and had a lovely dinner before getting some sleep before the next morning.

Day 2: Durban 2 day safari tour to Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve

We checked out early at 06:25, had some breakfast and made our way back into the game reserve 10 minutes away. We began slowly but things got better.

We spotted some Rhino near to the road.

Possibly the best sighting we had was a Black Rhino which is hugely endangered and for me like seeing a Leopard. He was up on the Hill in the distance and I even made a little video clip on him.

We continued our Durban safari tour finding Buffalo and the cutest thing was this little fella which had duck teeth!

Moving along we spotted some Zebra near to the road which made for a great photo and even more so when they crossed over the road. We now had a real Zebra crossing on our Durban safari tour.

It was now time to speed up and get out of Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve and move on to St Lucia estuary but before we could leave we spotted a couple of Bull Elephants on the main road going out.

We had a relaxed drive to St Lucia were we would be catching a 2 hour boat cruise on the estuary to see Hippos and crocodiles. When we arrived the boat was busy but still we enjoyed it and had some great sightings.

Our next major sighting was a better sighting of Hippos we had already seen some just after we left the jetty but these were better, a big pod of Hippos. We enjoyed them and relaxed with the good sunny weather we still had.

It had been a real cracker of a Durban safari tour and we stopped in the town of St Lucia for some lunch which was again amazing!

After this we did some gift shopping and back to Durban it was were I dropped off my happy clients at their home.

This had been an amazing Durban safari tour!
