Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve and St Lucia Safari Tour 26-27 March 2013

I collected my clients from a hotel in Umhlanga near Durban City, They were both looking for things to do in Durban when they contacted me.

They both decided of a 2 Day Safari Tour of Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve the oldest in Africa and home to the Big 5 plus St Lucia Wetlands(Isimangeliso Wetland park) was the best option.

We departed and enjoyed some chatter on the History of Durban, it social structure, population groups etc etc.

It was interesting as both my clients were teacher but now the shoe was on the other foot as I became the teacher…

We entered the reserve from Memorial gate Hluhluwe and had such good luck seeing, Rhino, Buffalo, Elephant, Impala, Kudu, Giraffe, Zebra, Nyala, Warthog and even a Jackal Buzzard sun bathing its wings on the ground next to the road.

It was great and no rain till lunch time, We sat outside and had to run back in as the heavens opened and it was great. Secretly I knew once the rain stopped for good the animals would have to come out to remark territories.

We went back out at 3pm till 6pm and saw loads but there was still rain about the place. After a great day it was dinner time and off to bed.

At 6am we got back on the road and 4 km from camp on the main tar road was 5 Lions just relaxing. It was special to say the least as we had 10 minuted alone with them before any other vehicle arrived. We lead the proccession as the Lioness(dominant mother) called her cubs (3 years old) and they all wandered down the road until they had had enough and entered the thick bush for the day.

Amazing sighting in Hluhluwe Umfolozi.

Later that drive we found Rhinos in the mud, Buffalo and some antilope but the Lions made the the whole trip!

It was back for breakfast and checking out before heading to St Lucia(Isimangeliso Wetland park) where we took a 2hour boat cruise on the estuary viewing hippos, birds and a Big Crocodile close up.

After this Lunch and curio shopping was the order of the day before we headed back to Durban and said our farewells.

What a great Safari Tour of Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Hluhluwe Umfolozi and St Lucia(Isimangeliso Wetland Park).
