Yesterday I did a Tour to Umgeni River Bird Park and the Natal Sharks Board.
It was very different to the Tours I usually do in an around Durban/Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Luckily the bird park run a flight show at 11am which we attended and I must say the guide was very good with the birds most of which were not found in South Africa at all like – The King Vulture and Laughing Kucaburra (which I cant spell).
We were bombarded with school children which wasn’t to much fun but it was good to see that teachers are getting the kid out into the places to educate the kids in something a little more practical and exciting.
In one of the pictures my head was nearly taken off by a Maribu Stork in flight which was aiming for a perch above my head (very exciting)
After the Bird park we went off for a bite to eat and then to the Natal Sharks Board, which I haven’t been to in years! This was great.
They first showed a very entertaining and educational video for about 30 minutes then we went out for the dissection of one of the species of Hammerhead shark which was caught in the Shark nets on the 23/2/12.
We got to see what its last meal was(octopus), its sex(male), its Liver(which contains lots of oils to help with boy-ency), heart, lungs and sensory organs.
This was very interesting and a bit disturbing to the stomach…lol
The lady that did the show was very good and very well spoken, she really made the show into a joke a minute even pretending to try on the sharks stomach as a sock due to its stretch-ability.
I was very impressed with the two guides and glad to see them working in educating School kids aswell.
