Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve, Cat rehab and Isimangeliso Wetland Park(St Lucia) 3 Day Durban Safari Tour 10 – 12 Feb 2014

This Durban Safari Tour began in Durban City where I collected my clients for our 3 Day Bush Safari tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve. We traveled up the North coast to Emdoneni Cat rehabilitation center where the Safari Tour really began. The clients had a great time interacting with Emdoneni’s 4 Different endangered cat species: Cheetah, Serval, Caracal and African Wild Cat.

Once we finished up our Tour of Emdoneni’s Cats we headed on to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve.

We entered at about 12 o’clock in the head of the day but still were very lucky on the hour drive to Hilltop camp hluhluwe where we would be spending the 2 nights of our Durban Safari 3 Day Tour.

After finding these Buffalo we also found Rhino and Elephant in a short space of time. A bonus was the Giraffe, Zebra and Impala.

It was time for lunch on day 1 of our Durban 3 Day safari tour so we stopped at Hilltop camp hluhluwe before checking in and getting back out to find more animals.

Once check in and Lunch at Hilltop camp was out the way we headed out to look for Elephants and Rhinos a bit closer to the road.

We had some great luck and found a breeding herd of Elephants as well as solitary males. One bull Elephant was walking down the road towards us which was great fun because he was a relaxed male. When males go through Musth they have 6 x the normal levels of testosterone running through there body. When this happen the can become more aggressive an less tolerant of vehicles. All the more reason to book a Durban Day or overnight Safari Tour with Tim Brown Tours  and not go it alone!

Later that afternoon just before the sun was setting we did see the African Wild Dogs but they were only visible with the Binoculars so sadly the picture is not worth putting up on the website.

After a great dinner and sleep we began Day 2 of our Hluhluwe Umfolozi 3 Day safari Tour heading down south to find cats! The trouble was the temperature rose so quickly that by 9am it was already 34 degrees, the hottest it got was 37 Degrees so sadly the cats were amiss… We did however have other great sightings of Rhino, Warthog, Buffalo, Zebra and the best being a giraffe drinking.

After a wonderful day my clients decided to try the open vehicle evening game drive to see if they would get lucky and find Lions. Sadly for them they didn’t see the lions but did find a Genet and Owl as part of the nocturnals.

After stretching our legs and having gone south again to look for Cats we were unsuccessful but we did find these baby crocodiles in the Umfolozi river and these baby Warthogs suckling from there mother.

We then departed Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve as our Durban 3 day safari Tour was coming to an end and headed to St Lucia (Isimangeliso Wetland park) for a 2 hour boat cruise on the Estuary.

We had a great cruise and saw many Hippos and a crocodile, Fish eagles, Kingfishers and much more.

We ended our Durban 3 day Safari tour in Durban city where I dropped off the clients at there respective hotels.

Although we did not see the big Cats except at Emdoneni Cat rehab Center we still had a hugely successful Safari Tour of Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve and Isimangeliso wetland park.
