Drakensberg Mountains Tour

Our Drakenberg Mountains Tour takes you to one of South Africa’s world heritage sites.

I collected my clients from Umhlanga north of Durban at 6am. Off we went on our Drankensberg Mountains Tour covering the great history of the area, politics, people and the wonderful nature.

We arrived a bit before 9am in the Southern Drakensberg to begin our adventure up the Sani Pass into Lesotho.

The Highest Country in the world!

Lesotho is average the highest country in the world. We would ascend 2874 meters in a vehicle to the summit and enjoy the majestic Drakenseberg mountains, a Sotho village and lunch at the highest pub in Africa!

During our Drakensberg Mountains Tour we stop every so often to take in the amazing view. But it was a misty day and this hindered some of the best views.

Before we could arrive at the South African boarder post we spotted some Eland far in the distance chewing the cud and resting for the day.

As we continued up Sani Pass heading for Lesotho we came across a number of lovely little waterfalls. As it’s now our Fall or Autumn we don’t get much rain but they were still flowing a little for our enjoyment.

It was not long before we arrived at the South African boarder post and we all got a rest and some stamps in our passports. It was clearing a little so we were hopeful for the rest of our Drakensberg day tour.

No Mans Land …. where is it and who owns it?

Drakensberg Mountains Tour : yes the Drakensberg mountains were looking great and we all hopped back into the 4 x 4 and continued into “no Mans land” which is 8 kilometers belonging to neither country.

The views were still lovely even with the cloud cover.

We then reached the Lesotho boarder post and now had made it all the way up the hair raising bends of Sani Pass to the summit. Here we got out and entered Lesotho where the sun was shining….

Welcome to Lesotho

Welcome to Lesotho

It was now time for our mini tour of Lesotho and we headed for a Basotho village 6 kilometers away where we were welcomed into a woman’s hut to learn more about the people and their culture.

The lady of the hut offered us some freshly made pot bread which is the highlight of the tour for me! lol.

We then stopped to look as some Angora goats which were on their way to South African to be sold.

After looking around and seeing how harsh life can be in the Drakensberg we made our way to the highest pub in Africa which is 2874 meters above sea level. We had some lunch and then began a slow descent of the mountain pass as it was so misty.

We arrived back at the base at 4pm and we still have a 3 hour drive back to Umhlanga so we got some coffee and began our journey. It was made a lot easier after having had a lovely day in on our Drakensberg mountain tour visiting Lesotho!
