Durban Safari Tour – 25/26 May 2016

Our Durban safari tour began in the city where I collected my clients. We made our way towards the Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve  – my most favorite protected area in Africa.

On route I covered the history of the area and any questions. Before you knew it we had arrived at the Cheetah interaction sanctuary for the tour there!

My clients and I have an amazing time with the Cheetah as well as the Serval, Caracal and the African Wild Cat. It was a great experience for them having come all the way from Panama for this Safari experience.

After the Cheetah interaction we arrived at the Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve and began our Safari from Durban.

We had luck very early on as we had a big herd of Buffalo on the road which is always great fun.

We were also lucky to have some close up shots of the Buffalo which made the experience brilliant.

Shortly after this amazing safari experience we got to see a difference kind of wildlife and spotted a Leopard tortoise which was drinking water in the rain next to the road. It was very interesting as he would drink and then squirt water/mud back out its nose. I can only guess this was to get some of the mud out of the water!

We then shot off down the road to the Hluhluwe river and the rain was so heavy that the roads were flooding! We managed to get a great picture of an Elephant bull near the river at a mud wallow.

It was time for lunch and check-in to the lodge of Hilltop which we did. We enjoyed some good lunch and after 20 minutes we made our way out again to see what else we could find.

Looking for Rhino and Lions ….YES … we wanted a good sighting of Rhino and to find Lions.

We got the Rhino sighting as we managed to wait long enough for them to cross the road in front of us.

It was great as we also spotted a lot of antelope and warthogs before checking the river again for the Lions with no luck. We did find an old carcass of a female Buffalo which was interesting.

It was not getting very dark but we did try for Lions with no luck so we had to head back to the lodge for dinner.

Dinner was great and we knew that we would have to work very hard the next day to find the Lions and see what we wanted to see!

Day 2: Durban safari tour

We got up early and spent the first half an hour of our safari in darkness and just as the sun was coming up we spotted a lovely male giraffe near the road.

It wasn’t much longer and we found a lovely wet Rhino which was rubbing himself on a tree stump which became very funny after a while.

After this we had to find these Lions and it was getting to desperation point! We did spot some Zebra which we quickly took a photo of as they were closer than we had seen the whole trip before moving on.

Finally we got lucky and even though all the tracks we found went in the opposite direction we found the Lions up on a hill. They slowly moved down and we had them to ourselves which was great!

We now headed back from Breakfast and then checked out before heading onward to St Lucia-Isimangaliso Wetland park.

It was here we would embark on a 2 hour boat cruise on the largest Estuary system in southern Africa, the point being finding Hippos!

We had a great sighting of a Goliath Heron the worlds tallest Heron catch a fish in front of us!

We also got a great shot again of a Hippo out the water and she was chewing on the base of a Mangrove tree which was interesting to see.

What a special 2 days it had been and now after some lunch we departed St Lucia for Durban. We had some great chats on route and 3 hours later were back in the city after a successful safari from Durban.

Tourism in Durban, South Africa during the Corona/Covid-19 pandemic

Tourism has always been the ever-growing side to our economy. But since the Corona/Covid-19 pandemic hit our shores in South Africa, it has been totally obliterated.

Lions Eyes

In the African bush indeed are the seen ~ and often unseen animal interactions.  One of the animal interactions we don’t see often is Rhino fighting each other for dominance. Either for the right to hold territory and/or to mate with females.
