Drakensberg Mountains Tour

Drakensberg Tour : Majestic and Memorable

The Drakensberg mountains are for me the most majestic mountains to tour and to share this place with my clients is truly a blessing! We began our tour from Durban where we collected our clients and we headed for the wonderful Cathedral peak in the central Drakensberg.

It was a lovely drive and very cold outside as we had snow-fall on the mountain which made things so much more interesting. I also took with me Themba who works with me as a Specialist safari guide and it was time for him to work on some hiking routes with me in the mountains.

It was a great mix as Themba being a Zulu can give even more in depth detail about the culture and I can cover all the rest making it a lovely mix for the clients.

Before you knew it we were in the mountains after 3 hours on the road and we could see the snow on the peaks of Catherdral and the surrounding areas, it was special!

We had some lunch and checked in before we went for a lovely 2-2.5 hour hike to a waterfall in the Cathedral peak area. On route we spotted Eland and had an amazingly close encounter with a Bush buck which really just made us feel super lucky!

Once we arrived back at camp I ensured we all had firewood for our fire places in the rooms and we then had a excellent dinner at the lodge. We were the only people there for the 3 days which was super!

Below is the picture of what we woke up to on the second day!

All of the Aloes from the Kranz Aloe, Mountain Aloe to the Aloe Ferox were in flower – which is lovely in Winter to add that touch of colour with the different shades of Yellows and Oranges of the grasses.

We had a great breakfast and made our way to the Royal Natal National Park in the Northern Drakensberg. We would begin with a short 1 hour total hike to and from some protected San bushmen paintings. The San Rock Art is really special and there are around 5000 sights in the Drakensberg. These hikes are guided to protect our heritage!

If you are not sure what is in the painting let me explain. There is an Eland the big antelope and the smaller antelope is a Bush buck female. In the middle at the bottom is Cobra and San men hunting. They would use the venom for poison on the end of there arrow heads to target Eland their token animal for food. There is also a Leopard in the top left of picture!

Before we could get down from the cave we spotted Eland staring at up from the opposite ridge which was amazing!

After this amazing hike we stopped for a short rest before beginning a 3 hour hike in the Mont Aux Sources area of the Northern Drakensberg.

The hike was lovely and we stopped at a couple small waterfalls and streams while walking through open areas and forest land.

It was truly a great route in the Drakensberg and as the day was warm the snow on the peaks was almost all melted by the time we finished our hike.

It was now time for some lunch as it was 13:30. We stopped at a restaurant near Royal Natal national park and drove there via the Tugela river, one of the two rivers coming from Mont Aux Sources.

Lunch was great and after this it was back to Didima where we arrived at 16:30 for a rest before dinner.

On the final day we enjoyed some breakfast before checking out and heading to the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands which is know as the Midlands meander.  Before we did this we stopped at a San Bushmen Rock Art Museum to look at some of the artifacts recovered over the years from the original South Africans.

Once arriving in at the Midlands meander we stopped at the Nelson Mandela capture site in Tweedie/Howick to look at the Iron sculpture of Mandela’s face and the Nelson Mandela Capture site Museum. This spot was where Mandela was captured before his trial and serving his 27 years for Treason.

To fully understand what took place in South Africa during Apartheid you would now need to read books or google to get more information. Lets just say it was a part of our history which will haunt South Africa for many years to come!

Once we had absorbed as much as we could we made our way into Howick a quaint little town with a beautiful waterfall called Howick Falls and some craft shops.

We stopped at the Howick falls and then looked through some of these shops before a quick visit to an Anglo-Boer Grave site/Memorial.

After we had our lunch while being serenaded by a Zulu street guitar player singing Christian songs which created a lovely atmosphere, we began the last 1.5 hours to Durban where we return our clients to there accommodation. We said our goodbyes after what has been an amazing 3 days of touring in the Drakensberg of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

Tourism has always been the ever-growing side to our economy. But since the Corona/Covid-19 pandemic hit our shores in South Africa, it has been totally obliterated.

In the African bush indeed are the seen ~ and often unseen animal interactions.  One of the animal interactions we don’t see often is Rhino fighting each other for dominance. Either for the right to hold territory and/or to mate with females.
