Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve day safari tour 30 May 2013
I met my client all at the same hotel in Durban for this Day Safari Tour which was no ordinary Tour. The day before a couple of them had come with my on a half day tour of the valley of 1000 hills and a Zulu cultural village.
After all the chit chat on the history we got the the reserve for a very memorable day.
We entered in the South East at Nyalazi gate and were have very good luck early on with sightings of impala, warthog, nyala, giraffe, buffalo etc. Things would soon spice up a little. We decided to do sontuli look which covers a vast area of Umfolozi River frontage. When we got down there also having seen Rhino we stopped at the picnicking site for the washrooms and herd a heard of Buffalo in the river reeds being attacked but Lions. We couldnt see from the picnic site so we raced to the next point of view to see a young pride of about 9 lions attacking buffalo. This was great to watch especially as it was 13:00 heat of the day. We kept seeing the lion run out of the reeds trying to separate a calf but the buffalo kept heads down and charged them. Eventually it ended in the buffalo running for there lives with all the lions including year old cubs in toe! It was brilliant to watch the whole thing. We were then treated to the lions crossing the umfolozi River which you wont see everyday!
We were all so content nothing else mattered so by the time we got to lunch it was 15:30 and after lunch there was only time for a little game viewing before leaving for Durban. We did however get an Elephant bull near the river which rounded off the experience.
An insane day all in all when the Gods played there role in giving us an amazing time!
