Kruger National Park Safari – what other options do YOU have?

Kruger National Park is often the first thing that comes to mind, yes? As a Durban based Tour Operator, I often think about why the Kruger national Park would be my first choice. What other option do You have …?

Well – Durban is home to the “oldest “game reserve (protected) Safari Park in Africa so say with us for some “nuggets of gold”

Why do Travelers Choose The Kruger National Park?

Here are a few reasons why travelers choose this destination for their Safari experience in South Africa, so stay tuned and keep reading …

Well Advertised

Yes the Kruger Park is very well advertised globally. So ask any traveller about South Africa and the first names are likely “Kruger Park” and “Table Mountain”

Understandably they are lovely destinations, however this is largely due to great marketing so whats the real deal?

Kruger national Park : why not?

It can be very busy (aka not quiet & flooded with visitors)

  • The Kruger National Park can sadly be literally flooded with visitors all year round. So expect accommodation facilities to be booked up over a year in advance but don’t be disheartened we can help.

Queues (not what you really want!)

  • Due to the shear number of visitors, the reserve has had to limit the number of visitor per day. Day visitors can expect a queue of vehicles waiting at the gate from as early as 4am! Not queued? You then run the risk of being denied entrance. Daily limits are around 500 vehicles per day. (In my opinion this is way too many and no fun at all)

High visitor levels can = congestion

  • High visitor levels means road blocks.  This is never a good thing as it increases stress on the animals that inhabit the vast area of the Kruger Park. In recent years we have noticed an increase in Elephants attacks on vehicles. Largely due to stress and self drivers not understanding animal behaviour or having the ability to get out of the way of a bull Elephants in Musth.

Always Go with a Qualified Guide

  • It is so Very important to go with a qualified guide when visiting any Safari Park. Safety First – Always! It may cost more but is certainly better than having an Elephant bash your vehicle over. A qualified & experienced guide will know the best areas and be able to find the best animals.

Krugers Sheer size can cause some problems

  • Massive it can take 2 days to drive from the South to the North at the speed limit. So if someone SPOTS an animal your guide or yourself may not be able to get there to see it.
  • There is an overpopulation of Elephants and Impala. Both of which, through feeding habits have put huge strain on the vegetation in reserve. This has caused loss of habitat for other species. It has also created the threat of Elephants becoming aggressive to visitors in the Park.

Elephants and Water – read on …. (they consumer upwards of 160 litres of water DAILY!)

  • Having so many Elephants – also means that Kruger Park has had to build unnatural concrete structures to hold water so that the Elephants have enough to drink. (Never good for a photograph!)

Now This … is what You are aiming for!

What other options do you have?

In KwaZulu-Natal the province containing Durban on the East coast of South Africa(which is much easier to access compared to Kruger), you will find the oldest & well established (since 1895) gem – The Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve!

Durbans Gem – Hluhluwe-Imfolozi – home to the BIG 5

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi game reserve is home to the Big 5, (Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant and Buffalo) and is also home to operation Rhino – and so all the  reason not to miss experiencing it.

Operation Rhino

A well world renown breeding program founded in the 1950’s/60′ to save the  Rhino population from extinction. In Kruger Park for example; there were no White Rhino left due to years of hunting so this breeding program “Re-Stocked” Kruger national Park as well as all other game reserves and Zoo’s around the world with White Rhino.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi – Rocks the World Wide White Rhino Program

Since every White Rhino in the World has its genetic origins in Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve it is an especially worthy reason to visit and support them. What a great draw card and something to share with your friends! The great thing about this best kept secret is the fact that we get limited numbers of vehicles and people entering the Park meaning there is less pressure/Stress on the animals affording us wonderful sightings of all the animals and consequently giving you a more peaceful and private safari.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi – the quiet & affordable tour option – YES!

If this isn’t enough to persuade you to visit Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve. Then there is also the fact that the costs to have a guided Safari/Tour with us are much less than even self driving in Kruger national park. Therefore “Tour with us” and don’t miss out on a lifetime experience.
