Durban 3 Day overnight Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve, Emdoneni Cat Rehab Centre and St Lucia(Isimangeliso Wetland park 23 – 25 February 2014

Our Durban 3 Day Big 5 Safari Tour began in Durban where I met my clients and we began our Safari. We departed first for Emdoneni Cat rehab Centre in Hluhluwe where the clients enjoyed the interaction with the Cat particularly the Cheetah.

After departing Emdoneni Cat rehab centre arrived at Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve, Memorial gate. Here we made our way slowly to Hilltop camp where we came across a few species of animal before arriving for lunch at and Check in at Hilltop camp.

After a great Lunch we decided that we would go out into the African Bush again at 4pm – 7pm to make the most of the late afternoon Safari drive.

We slowly began piecing together the Big 5 little by little. Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve like any has the Big 5, Cheetah, Wild Dog as well as Giraffe and Zebra. Of Course there are lots of other antelope, Warthogs, Dung beetles etc to be seen on this kind of a Safari Tour from Durban.

These big Rhinos are one of the Big 5 and we do tend to see plenty of them on our Safari Tours however with Poaching decimating numbers we could have less than 50 years left to see these great animals. This is reason enough to take a Durban Safari Tour with Tim Brown Tours!

White Rhino Horn Genetic abnormality on our 3 Day Durban Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve

Later the same afternoon we came across the female White Rhino with the genetic abnormality, where her horn curves downwards instead of upwards. If this is not a genetic abnormality then during her birth she must have landed awkwardly on her nose causing the growth point in of her horn to twist…Amazing stuff you can see on Tim Brown Tours Durban Safari Tours

After our Safari Game drive we headed back for dinner at Hilltop camp.

The food was great and we then went to bed to get some rest before Day 2’s long game drive down south to look for more of the Big 5.

Day 2: of our Durban 3 day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve.

After a lay in till 6am we had some breakfast and headed out on Safari to see what animals we could find.

We were lucky as usual and had some great sightings of the Big 5. We managed 4 of the Big 5 in this days Tour, Rhino, Lion, Buffalo and Elephant.

This picture was great as we came across 3 Elephant Bulls and the one was drinking and the other two had to wait for him to finish as there was only one hole dug in the sand to get water. The two others were just lazy, but in this time they started play fighting which looked really lovely.

Later we spotted a couple of Lioness resting in a dry river bed clearly after a big night out…

As we continued on our Safari Tour in Umfolozi we came across a big male buffalo in the river trying to cool off as it was a hot day.

We stopped for lunch at the historic Centenary Centre home to operation Rhino in the 1960’s. Without this programme there would be no more Rhinos left in South Africa! South Africa is a Flagship country and KwaZulu-Natal, Durban as well as Hluhluwe Umfolozi have played massive roles in conserving what little we have left in the natural system.

We are very lucky to still be able to visit such natural places like Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve on these kind of Safari Tours out of Durban.

We then returned to Hilltop camp for a quick rest before the open vehicle game drive and dinner.

Then it was off to bed before the next day.

Day 3: of our Durban 3 day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve.

Rising at 6am and having some breakfast before checking out of the Hilltop camp we then spend 3 hours on our final safari game drive looking for anything.

We were lucky as we came across the African Wild dogs the most endangered carnivore in Africa running around on a riverbed. It was a long way off but we still go some sort of photo.

After spending some time with them and finding a few more of the Big 5 we departed Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve and headed on to St Lucia or Isimangeliso Wetland park. Isimangeliso Wetland Park is 3300 hectares so 3 times the size of Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve. It is home to 4 of the Big 5 and has a beautiful Estuarine system which contains hundreds of  Hippos and Crocodiles.

We took a 2 hour Safari Tour on the Santa Lucia Boat to view these great beasts and the clients really enjoyed it before we headed on to have some lunch in the small town of St Lucia.

After my Burger and the Guests Pizzas we departed for Durban City to drop the clients off at there hotel.

This Durban 3 Day overnight Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve, Emdoneni Cat Rehab Centre and St Lucia(Isimangeliso Wetland park was amazing and we were lucky to see the amount of animals we saw. If you are reading this Safari Tour blog post I would highly recommend you take the time to visit South Africa and let Tim Brown Tours take you on a Tour of a lifetime.
