Drakensberg Mountains Tour

Drakensberg Mountains Tour 17-19th December 2015

We began our Drakensberg Mountains tour in Pietermaritzberg and headed straight for South Africa’s second proclaimed World heritage site.

We arrived  around midday and settled in for some lunch and then a visit to the San Rock art center. This is situated on the site of the Didima resort where we would spend the next couple of nights.

The Museum as usual was very interesting with lots of great items on display. The Drakensberg history goes back a long time as does that of the San bushmen.

Cagn the San Bushmens God

Cagn the San Bushmens God

The San bushmen called their God, Cagn. As the Eland antelope was their main source of food and supernatural potency they believed – where Cagn was the Eland were in droves like cattle.

Some of the artifacts in the museum have been discovered more recently. The Below image of the San bushman Holster, Arrows, poison pouch etc were discovered in 1926.

The Cathedral peak area of the Drakensberg mountain is very beautiful and has some lovely hikes. So after we were done in the San rock art museum we went on a 3 hour hike to enjoy the majestic Drakensberg Mountains and the nature it holds.

The hike in the Drakensberg to Doreen falls is very pleasant and we spotted some lovely Proteas along the way with the great views of Cathedral peak.

It wasn’t long and we arrived at Doreen falls which had very little water after the issues of drought we have been facing in KwaZulu-Natal.

It was still an amazing site and part of the majestic Drakensberg mountains.

We made our way back through the Drakensberg mountains to Didima and settled in for the night with some great food.

Day 2: Drakensberg mountain tour

Our second day began with breakfast and then we drove to the Northern Drakensberg to Royal Natal national park for a couple of hikes in that section of the mountain.

We began with the San rock art bushman painting hike which takes an hour or so. And we got to see some amazing rock art.

The Royal Natal National Park and this area of the Northern Drakensberg is my personal favourite part of the Drakensberg Mountains with amazing views.

The San rock art is something you need to see to really understand how amazing it is.

In the picture below you will see a San Bushman hunting a Leopard which was hunting the Bush buck. The Leopard was always an enemy of the San as they killed and ate the same food.

We hiked to the Cascades which also had very little water but were still lovely and then hiked back down the mountain to head off for some lunch.

Lunch was great and then we made our way to a little town called Winterton which had an antique shop which one on my clients had shown an interest in.

We returned to the Central Drakensberg and Didima for some rest and then dinner.

After a great dinner we headed to bed.

Drakensberg Mountains Tour : Day 3

On this third day we simply headed for breakfast and then made our way back to Durban where I dropped my clients off at the Essenwood market and their guest house.

It had been another great tour and the Drakensberg really showed off her better side!

Tourism has always been the ever-growing side to our economy. But since the Corona/Covid-19 pandemic hit our shores in South Africa, it has been totally obliterated.

In the African bush indeed are the seen ~ and often unseen animal interactions.  One of the animal interactions we don’t see often is Rhino fighting each other for dominance. Either for the right to hold territory and/or to mate with females.
