South African Safari 26-29 July 2015

We began our South African safari near Durban where I collected my client who were out for a Baptist conference here in Durban, South Africa!

As it was a slightly larger group than I usually take on Safaris from Durban I rented a 13 seat vehicle and trailer.

Once we got all the luggage in we headed off to Hluhluwe Imfolozi and Hilltop camp for our 3 nights there and to enjoy nature at its best.

On route I covered as much history of Durban, KwaZulu Natal and South Africa as possible over the microphone and in no time it seemed we had arrived at the gate into Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve, my second home.

Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve as a deep history which you can read about on the link over the words Hluhluwe….

It is well known for having saved Rhino from extincting in the 1940’s and 50’s.

On route to Hilltop camp we spotted one of these amazing Rhinos the White Rhino before having the most amazing Black Rhino sight I have had in a long time. This male Black Rhino walked down a slope and crossed the road in front of us and was super relaxed for a Black Rhino. I was amazed and we were all super happy.

Video: Black Rhino crosses road in front of us during our Durban safari

What a special moment! We then arrived at Hilltop camp and checked in getting clients and luggage to the rooms which did take a little but of time as it was dark.

We then met for dinner before a good nights sleep.

Day 2: South African safari from Durban

Day two began at 06:30 am and we made our way into the northern section of Hluhluwe game reserve. We had luck right off the bat as we found Elephants near to the road and all down in the valley and up on the hills near the camp.

We also had some amazing luck with Rhino as we got one posing very nicely for us all during our South African safari in Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve.

We were trying our best for the African wild dogs but hear they had made there way over the river after feeding on an Nyala and taken their puppies with them. So we continued and up the road found a huge herd of Buffalo in fact we must has seen about 6 herds of Buffalo….

I love the above Buffalo picture even though it is not sharp it has character with the flies and the dust. We also managed to spot some Zebra on our South African safari which was great as the sunlight really hit them nicely.

The one Zebra looks like she is laughing at us… As we continues our 4 day safari tour in Hluhluwe we also found Giraffe but they were far away and I knew we would get them later. So we continued back to camp for breakfast before heading out to the Cat rehabilitation center.

The Cat rehabilitation center was amazing and my clients loved it as they got to interact with Cheetah hands on and Serval.

The next picture was of the Cheetah cub which is 3-4 months old and the clients got to play with him, he is very cute and playful. Wow what a South African safari this was turning out to be from Durban!

We then made our way back to the gate and just stopped for some food and fuel. We then got back to camp as some of the group we doing the evening open vehicle safari and other we coming with me.

Those that came with me were treated to a few things, the first was a Southern Tree Agama.

We also found some Vultures in a tree among the usual things like the Elephants, Rhino, Buffalo, Zebra and even a Wildebeest.

We then had great fortune and found the Giraffe we had been looking for near to the road so it was great for photos excepting the light was beginning to fade. Either way it was fantastic and our success continued during our Safari from Durban in South Africa.

We tried one more time for cats and dogs with no luck, but we had an amazing sighting for a rare specie the Bush Pig which you usually only see at night. It was now dusk and the video I made came out decently but not very well.

We still had one more shot of the day and it was of the sun going down and the planets Venus and Jupiter! The night sky had cleared from the previous night was was looking great with so many stars out.

We had a great day on safari from Durban.

It was now time to wait for the others to get back and at 8pm we all had a great dinner. The food at Hilltop camp is always lovely. We were all very tired and headed off to bed as we would meet the next day fairly early at 7am for breakfast.

Day 3: South African safari from Durban

We began the day in the hope of finding cats but sadly we battled for them through the day!

This did not bother us much as we found many other species of animals from Elephant to Mongooses.

We were wanting to see more Giraffe on this African Safari and we did.

My clients were very happy with the Giraffe and after a short while we spotted a bull Elephant which crossed the road in front of us and fed next to the road to I made a video of this.

We slowly made our way down to the Umfolozi river and before we got there we spotted a Rhino bull which decided to sit down and then have a rest by lying down.

It was an amazing sighting as I managed to shoot the sequence of events.

After the Rhino went to sleep we made our way over the Umfolozi river which was in full force after the heavy rain we had had a couple days before! It was great to see this river flowing so well during our Durban safari in South Africa.

We continued and tried to get as far south as we could but time was also running out as I was unable to travel very fast in the 13 seat vehicle.

Things were quiet and we decided to stop at Bhejane hide hide and see what animals would come to us but sadly it was only birds.

We did however see Terrapins on the bank of the watering hole.

Once of the best sighting at the watering hole was this African Hoopoe which was searching for food and maybe had a nest in this dead tree next to the watering hole.

We the made our way to the Centenary center for some lunch and then had a look around the curio shop. As we were a group of 12 it took longer than we thought and we needed to rush back to Hilltop camp to get back for the clients who were doing the evening open vehicle safari and to load up most of the luggage into the trailer, Thank you Jason for your help!

We arrived back and sorted everything out before meeting for dinner. We had to wait for the 4 clients that went on the open vehicle game drive but it was a good wait.

As we stood at the bar we noticed that Prince Harry was in the restaurant enjoying dinner we could not believe our luck to see such a character. We waited on the others and told them but did not want to bother the young prince as others were doing and we sat to enjoy our meal having had a great day.

Day 4: South African safari from Durban

We began our forth day with a very early start at 05:45 and left Hilltop camp by 6am for St Lucia or Isimangaliso Wetland park for our 2 hour boat cruise viewing Hippos and crocodiles.

We arrived 10 minuted early and had a great 2 hour on the boat seeing lots of Hippos, Crocodiles, Mangroves and birds.

As the boat cruise drew to an end we had one more sighting and that was of a Bull Shark swimming in the St Lucia Estuary! They have been stuck here since 2007 when the estuary closed naturally to the ocean due to a lack of rainfall.

We finished up our cruise and began our way back to Durban International or King Shaka International airport stopping along the way for some food and coffee.

We arrived on time for the clients that would be catching there flights out of Durban and I took two of the clients after the safari to the Hilton Hotel in Durban. It had been an amazing tour having just missed out on the cats!

We all enjoyed it and would have many memories to take back home with us.

Durban 5 Day Big 5 overnight Safari Tour to Hluhluwe

umfolozi Game reserve, Emdoneni Cat Reb centre and

St Lucia Wetlands ( Isimangeliso Wetland Park) – 24

    March – 28 March 2014.

Day 1: Durban Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi Game reserve

On this Durban Big 5 Overnight Safari Tour we began in Durban city as usual but there would be nothing usual about this Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve!

On Route to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve I covered most of the major history of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa before covering Hluhluwe Umfolozi History and Early Zulu History.

We arrived at Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve at about 12:00 at the Memorial gate where we entered this majestic, scenic game reserve for our Durban Big 5 Safari Tour. Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve is 960 square kilometres in size, home to the Big 5 and the beginning of our Durban Big 5 Safari Tour.

Our Safari sightings began immediately as we stumbled across a pair of White Rhinos resting in the mud wallow before finding a Journey of Giraffe on the main road! This was making our 5 Day Durban Safari Tour experience very interesting…

One of our first sightings on our Durban Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi was these Giraffe on the road.

We made our way to Hilltop camp where we would be spending 4 nights and had some lunch before checking into the camp and heading back out for another Safari Tour game drive in Hluhluwe game reserve.

We had a great sighting of some dung beetles rolling there balls on the road as well as a Flapped Necked Chameleon. I was happy about this as they are hard to spot on while driving in the day time.

Later this fine afternoon we found a big breeding herd of Buffalo and a few decided to mud wallow in front of us next to the road. This was a great experience for the clients on this Big 5 Safari Tour from Durban. Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve was really keeping us occupied! This was now the Second of the Big 5 for this Safari Tour.

We continued on and came across a White Rhino and her calf grazing near to a big Male Rhino. She really posed for us and we added her to our collection of the Big 5 of this Safari Tour to Hluhluwe.

Time was ticking and we got ourselves stuck behind a stubborn Elephant Bull who happened to be in Musth which made him extra dangerous and frustrated with the noise of the engine. On Day 1 of 5 days to have already found 3 of the Big 5 on a Hluhluwe umfolozi safari tour was brilliant!

Durban Safari Tours are really pumping at the moment and some brilliant sightings of the Big 5.

We had to rush back to Hilltop camp before our Safari time was up. Dinner was a great event and the food at Hilltop camp was very enjoyable.

We were all very tired after a busy Day of Safari Touring, it was time for bed.

Day 2: Durban Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi Game reserve

We left Hilltop camp at 6am when the gates opened and headed around the loop of Seme/Maqanda. On our Morning Safari Tour in the Hluhluwe section we came across a lot of plains game animal. We actually had 4 different species at one watering hole, the Rhino, Wildebeest, Zebra and Impala.

Always good to see one of the Big 5 and Zebra is also a bonus.

After a while of looking at these great animals interacting the Rhinos got up off the ground and this is what we saw on our Safari Tour game drive.

We also had a lovely herd of Wildebeest playing near the Zebra and Rhinos of Our Durban 5 day safari Tour.

It was time to crack on and see what else this Morning Safari would bring and as we drove thru the forest we found the monkey’s playing in the Sycamore fig trees. This dominant male seemed to lose something… Silly monkey!

It was time to get back to the lodge for some breakfast and a rest before the afternoon Safari Game drive in the Hluhluwe section. We would also have an open vehicle Safari Game drive Tour with the Lodge from 5pm -8pm.

On our afternoon Safari Tour we did have some luck and got this great interaction of a Young elephant trying to chase a Rhino, Well it back fired and the Rhino chased the Elephant and sent him trumpeting away.

It was time to get back to Hilltop camp for the open vehicle Safari ride from the lodge. After this I had a little rest.

Dinner was great at Hilltop camp as usual.

I really slept well this night but knew we had a lot of work ahead of us as we needed some cats!

Day 3: Durban Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi Game reserve

We got up insanely early at 4am before departing to Muyaneni bush lodge where we would meet a National park Guide and head out for a Safari Bush walk. Once we began it was so beautiful just to smell the bush and really just to experience nature at its rawest. We found some Leopard tracks on the Safari Walk but no Leopard. We spotted an Owl, Rhino twice, Impala, Zebra and Giraffe. All in all this 5 Day safari Tour from Durban to Hluhluwe Umfolozi was turning out to be good.

When we arrived back at Hilltop camp at 9am we had some breakfast and rushed back out as I had heard that Lions had been spotted in the Umfolozi section. Again our Safari was rushed down to get to them and we were in luck as the Lions crossed the road in front of our vehicle. This was the second time in a row this happened to me on the past to Durban overnight safari Tours.

The were so beautiful these Lions and just when we thought it was to stop there we found 2 Larger Male Lions Under an Acacia Tree! This was the 4th of the Big 5 we had seen of our Durban 5 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi.

Just 30 -40 meters from these two sleeping male Lions was an Old Buffalo Bull in the mud but he didn’t care one big as he rested peacefully.

Day 4: Durban Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi Game reserve

We began our day a lot more relaxed than we would usually a Durban Safari Tour. Having said that we had some great sightings after breakfast. Giraffe, Zebra and a few other animals including a bushveld gerbil.

This Durban Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve was turning out to be a great one! One sighting I really enjoyed was these Zebras below: The male crossed the bridge and the females were not that comfortable at crossing after him so he kept looking back at them as if to say come along girls!

Later at Hilltop camp I sat down with the clients to look as some of the pictures and videos they had got and some were really good from the first few days of our Durban 5 Day Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi.

After lunch we headed out for a Safari Game drive on route to Emdoneni Cat rehabilitation centre for the Cat Tour.

We were so lucky to find these Chacma Baboons on the road and they were so funny it even looked like one was giving us the finger!

At Emdoneni the clients really enjoyed the Tour through the rehab centre and Touching the Cheetah, Caracal, Serval and African Wild Cat.

We had to rush back to get in by 6pm at the gate and then back to Hilltop camp for dinner.

Dinner was lovely as usual it seemed we were all tired as dinner only lasted a bit less than an hour before we walked back to our rooms to get a good nights rest.

Overall the Big 5 Safari Tour today has been great and relaxing especially with the cooler weather.

Day 5: Durban Big 5 Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi Game reserve

After a bit of rain falling over night on our 5 Day Durban Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve we got ready for breakfast before checking out and beginning our final 3 hour Safari Game Drive in the park.

It was sad to leave Hilltop camp Hluhluwe but we had another big day ahead of us as we were also visiting Isimangeliso wetland park AKA St Lucia Wetlands for a 2 hour boat cruise viewing Hippos and crocodiles.

We headed down into Umfolozi section of the reserve and were lucking as the puddles in the road game us a chance of taking this great picture of a Baboon is estrus drinking out of a puddle.

As we continued our Durban Safari Tour we were so lucky and found this beautiful male Lion just out marking his territory after the rains. This common practice but to see if was great for all of us.

Big Male Lion marking his territory on our Durban 5 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve

Big Male Lion marking his territory on our Durban 5 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve

We were running out of time and had to rush our Durban Safari Tour along and depart from Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve and head to Isimangeliso wetland park (St Lucia wetlands).

After a short hour drive from the South Eastern gate Nyalazi we arrived in St Lucia for the Boat tour. This was a great Tour as the weather cleared up a bit and was lovely and warm on the boat. At St Lucia wetlands we spotted about 50 odd Hippos and about 3 crocodiles with Fish eagles and Goliath Herons as well. Visiting St Lucia Wetlands with out doing a Safari Tour of the Estuary on a boat to view Hippos and Crocodiles is not a option!

After the Cruise in St Lucia we headed to the small town to get lunch and then departed for Durban where we began our Durban Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi, Cat rehab center and Isimangeliso Wetland park (St Lucia) 5 days prior.

It was overall a great Safari Tour from Durban with 4 of the Big 5 being seem more than once! Just the Leopard eluded us but this is common to not be seen.

Durban 2 Day overnight Safari Tour to Hluhluwe

umfolozi Game reserve and St Lucia Wetlands

    ( Isimangeliso Wetland Park) – 22 March – 23 March

    2014.

On this Durban Overnight Safari Tour we began in Durban city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal as usual but there would be nothing usual about this Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve!

On Route to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve I covered most of the major history of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa before covering Hluhluwe Umfolozi History and Early Zulu History.

We arrived at Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve at about 09:30 at the Nyalazi gate where we entered this majestic, scenic game reserve for our Durban Safari Tour. Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve is 960 square kilometres in size, home to the Big 5 and the beginning of our Durban Big 5 Safari Tour.

Our Safari sightings began slowly as rain had fallen all over the reserve the day before but today the sun was out in force and the temperatures rose to 35 Degree Celsius during the Day.

One of our first sightings on our Durban Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi was the Warthog which is not one of the Big 5 but just as interesting.

Muddy Warthog Rubbing on a log on our Durban 2 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve and St Lucia Isimangeliso Wetland Park

We continued further South finding Impala, Wildebeest, Zebra and White Rhinos. These White Rhinos Spotted on our Durban overnight Safari Tour had been in the mud and were right next to the road which mad for a great photo opportunity. White Rhino are one of the Big 5 so we now had one of the Big 5 knocked off the list.

As we continued on our Safari Tour in the Umfolozi section of the reserve we were stunned at almost 1pm to find a Lioness hunting Warthog! Sadly she missed them as they got wind of here and bolted for the bushes. This Safari Tour from Durban was becoming quite something! Just around the bend we spotted the rest of the Pride 5 more Lions. 4 Being Females and one a Young Lion. They all crossed the dirt road in front of our vehicle. This was truly a blessing mostly because it was the heat of the day and we don’t usually see Lions so active at that time, So Now we had 2 of the Big 5 found and only 3 to go.

We continued our Safari Tour in Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve before heading back to Centenary centre for some lunch and back to Hilltop for the afternoon open vehicle game drive Safari Tour.
Hilltop camp is a beautiful lodge hidden away in the forest of the Hluhluwe game reserve, they are fully catered and a guide is always recommended.

Lunch was great and on route to Hilltop camp we actually found our 3rd one of the Big 5 on our Safari Tour from Durban, Buffalo. This Buffalo bull was thrusting his horns around the grass – we call it adornment. The grass or twigs that gets stuck in the horns is supposed to make the male more attractive to the female Buffalo…

After this we were almost at Hilltop camp in Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve when we spotted Elephants a small breeding herd of about 9 Elephants. This was now number 4 of the Big 5 and we had done really well in just one day on our Durban Safari Tour.

Elephant Herd on our Durban 2 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve and St Lucia Isimangeliso Wetland Park

We were now in a rush to get checked into Hilltop camp Hluhluwe before the open vehicle game drive Safari Tour but it was worth it!
We arrived at Hilltop camp I rushed in and got the check in out the way before rushing through the forest to the rooms to drop off the luggage and get the clients back down for the Open vehicle Safari Tour experience.

After the Open Vehicle experience my clients returned having seen much of the same animals but no cats so I was really glad we had found then in the Umfolozi section. It was time for dinner and I could feel my eyes wanting to shut as we began dinner after 8pm at Hilltop camp, We were the last to leave the lodge for bed!

Day 2: Durban 2 Day overnight Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi Game reserve and St Lucia Wetlands ( Isimangeliso Wetland Park)

We had a 7am breakfast at Hilltop camp Hluhluwe before checking out and doing our last 2.5 Hours Safari Tour Game Drive in Hluhluwe Umfolozi. We found some Giraffe, Rhino, Buffalo and a few other species but not the same at the first day of our Durban Safari Tour…

It was not time to depart Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve for St Lucia Isimangeliso Wetland Park, South Africas first World heritage site. It was beautiful and the weather was perfect for our 2 hour St Lucia Boat cruise on the Estuary.

We saw Loads of Hippos and a few crocodiles as well as a Fish Eagle. We had been very lucky all Safari Tour long and Isimangeliso Park was no different!

Once we were back at the Jetty it was time for some lunch in St Lucia Town we all enjoyed our food before the final drive back to Durban City.
The final 2.5 hours back were taken up by the last few questions and I think we all felt that we had achieved a lot in a short space of time of our Durban Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve and Isimangeliso Wetland park/St Lucia.

Durban 2 Day overnight Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve and St Lucia(Isimangeliso Wetland park) 12 – 13 March 2014

I collected my clients from Umhlanga just outside Durban for there 2 day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umoflozi game reserve and Isimangeliso wetland park(St Lucia).

This overnight Safari Tour from Durban had a quick start even with the weather being a little cloudy at times. We entered into the umfolozi section of Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve through the Nyalazi gate and headed down south to try get lucky with finding the Cats. This was not to be, however we did find White Rhino, Buffalo, Elephant, Kudu, Warthog, Impala, Zebra, Wildebeest and Giraffe before the day of Touring as done.

Actually the number of animals we saw was amazing for the weather and time of day on the Durban Safari Tour in KwaZulu-Natal.

Bull Elephant on our Durban 2 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve

We found this Bull Elephant actually there was a small breeding herd and about 4 Bull Elephants which were grazing away enjoying the grass after the big rains we have been experiencing. The rain can be both a blessing and a hindrance in Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve when we Tour there. Basically the animals do not need to stay close to the permanent water sources if there is a lot of water around which means they could move far and wide in a 960 square Kilometer reserve.

Later on our Safari Tour from Durban we came across some Giraffe feeding on the Acacia trees.

Giraffe on our Durban 2 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve

We continued on further on our Durban Safari Tour in the Bush and found more animals.

This was a beautiful image of a Dazzle of Zebra resting there heads on each others backs which also means the tail of the other keeps the fly’s off the others  nose.

Dazzle of Zebra on our Durban 2 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve

We eventually stopped for lunch at the centenary center home to operation Rhino in the 1960’s. The food was great for a place in the middle of the bush. We continues our safari tour shortly after and moved into the Hluhluwe Section of the Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve.

It was a little quiet and we needed to check in so we stopped at Hilltop camp before heading back out into the bush to Tour the northern Section.

We we lucky as the grass was at eye level to find this young male White Rhino on the road.

White Rhino on our Durban 2 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve

By this point in time I was feeling pretty tired with all the driving and concentrating mostly because the sightings became harder to come across with the long grass in Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve.

We found a troop of baboons which were about to go and sleep in the Sycamore fig trees for the night.

This beautiful Male Baboon sat in the road for use posing before darkness fell upon our Safari Tour from Durban.
Male Baboon on our Durban 2 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve

We began our Safari Drive back to Hilltop camp where we would be spending the night and in the darkness we had some excitement but not the kind you really want. A branch of a tree almost fell onto the car and as we came around another bend 2 big elephant bulls were standing in the road. What excitement.

Day 2 of our Durban 2 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve and St Lucia (Isimangeliso Wetland park).

We got up really early and were on the reserve Hluhluwe by 05:30 in the dark. It was great but sadly a little quiet on the animal front. So after 2.5 hours we returned to Hilltop camp for Breakfast and big Buffet. The coffee was most welcome.

We then did a very quick check out and began a final Safari Tour of Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve before heading out at Memorial gate in the North and onward to take a 2 hour boat Tour at St Lucia(Isimangeliso Wetland Park).

When we arrived and hopped on the boat at St Lucia it was a little cold but it warmed up as we saw load of Hippos and 2 big crocodiles. There were some beautiful Fish eagles and Kingfishers as well on the estuary in the mangrove swamps.

After the 2 hours it was time for lunch and then we began the 2.5 hours back to Durban after a great Durban overnight Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve and St Lucia(Isimangeliso wetland park).

Durban 3 Day overnight Safari Tour to Hluhluwe

Umfolozi Game reserve, Emdoneni Cat Rehab Centre and

    St Lucia(Isimangeliso Wetland park) 26 – 28 February

    2014

Our Durban 3 Day Big 5 Safari Tour began in Durban where I met my clients and we began our Safari. We departed first for Emdoneni Cat rehab Centre in Hluhluwe where the clients enjoyed the interaction with the Cat particularly the Cheetah.

After departing Emdoneni Cat rehab centre arrived at Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve, Memorial gate. Here we made our way slowly to Hilltop camp where we came across a few species of animal before arriving for lunch at and Check in at Hilltop camp.

After a great Lunch we decided that we would go out into the African Bush again at 4pm – 7pm to make the most of the late afternoon Safari drive.

We slowly began piecing together the Big 5 little by little. Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve like any has the Big 5, Cheetah, Wild Dog as well as Giraffe and Zebra. Of Course there are lots of other antelope, Warthogs, Dung beetles etc to be seen on this kind of a Safari Tour from Durban.

2 White Rhinos Drinking in Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve on our 3 Day Durban Safari Tour

These two White Rhinos came to a watering hole to try and get a drink of water on this hot Safari Tour Day we were lucky to eventually witness this pair drink. We actually had 5 Rhinos at this watering hole one being the dominant male of the area and he kept chasing the others away. This was a great start to the afternoon Safari Game drive for us. Durban Safari Tours with Tim Brown Tours to Hluhluwe Umfolozi can be rewarding!

3 White Rhinos Nose to Nose in Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve on our 3 Day Durban Safari Tour

Above was the first clash of horns between the big male Rhino on the left and this young male and female white Rhino. It was a very exciting look at these amazing animals, Safaris Tours never get boring even when you have been doing it a many years as I have. Brilliant stuff to see on  a Hluhluwe umfolozi Safari Tour with Tim Brown Tours.

Big Buffalo Bull in Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve on our 3 Day Durban Safari Tour

Later on this fine afternoon we got a Big male Buffalo crossing the road to join his mates. We were so luck that we even spotted a Lioness on the road sadly it happened so quick that by the time we took the camera out she had hidden herself in the long grass and we would not see her again. This didnt matter as our luck was really up and 2 minutes we got this Hyena walking down the road following the scent of Lions and probably trying to snatch a meal. Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve is really an amazing place we were so lucky to have already seen what we had. Safaris from Durban to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve are a must for travelers looking for things to do in Durban and surrounding areas.

Spotted Hyena in Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve on our 3 Day Durban Safari Tour

After spotting this Hyena we needed to start heading back to Hilltop camp before the gates closed. We got back and had a great dinner before it was time to get some rest after a great Day Safari Tour in the African bush!

Day 2: Durban 3 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve.

Day 2 began as Day 1 had ended and the Big 5 were out in force! We decided to head down south to look for more cats and see the Umfolozi section of the game reserve. Todays Safari was long and hot but we had some great sightings of the Big 5 including this Elephant Bull Drinking.

Bull Elephant Drinking in Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve on our 3 Day Durban Safari Tour

Probably the best part of our 3 day Safari Tour from Durban to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve came first this on Day 2 when we came across the most endangered carnivore in Africa, The African Wild dog. There were 7 of them and they we running down the main tar road looking to flush prey out of the bushes. We were very luck they were beautiful and smelly at the same time.

Pack of African Wild Dogs in Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve on our 3 Day Durban Safari Tour

We also witnessed these great animals rolling around in Rhino Dung and having found a piece of plastic playing with it. Not ideal but funny non the less. Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve is home to about 100 of these highly endangered African Wild dogs. We are very lucky to see these animals in the wild as they dont have long left before they will be gone from this world. Take a Durban Day or overnight Safari Tour with Tim Brown Tours to learn more about these animals.

Buffalo and Zebra in Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve on our 3 Day Durban Safari Tour

Later on Day 2 we were able to see more Zebra, Giraffe and Buffalo as well as Rhino and much more. Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve was treating us as usual to great sights in the Bush. It would not be the same with out these animals and we are lucky to still take clients from Durban on a Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi.

Day 3: Durban 3 Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve.

Day 3 was a much more quiet day in Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve but we were not there for long as we heading to St Lucia (Isimangeliso Wetland Park) for the 2 hour Boat Safari Cruise on the St Lucia estuary (Isimangeliso wetland park).

We managed to view loads of Hippos and a few crocodiles and Fish Eagles before our Safari Tour ended and we needed to get some food before heading back to Durban city.

Our Durban 3 Day Big 5 Safari Tour began in Durban where I met my clients and we began our Safari. We departed first for Emdoneni Cat rehab Centre in Hluhluwe where the clients enjoyed the interaction with the Cat particularly the Cheetah.

White Rhino Army Tanks walking down the road on our 3 Day Durban Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve

These big Rhinos are one of the Big 5 and we do tend to see plenty of them on our Safari Tours however with Poaching decimating numbers we could have less than 50 years left to see these great animals. This is reason enough to take a Durban Safari Tour with Tim Brown Tours!

White Rhino Horn Genetic abnormality on our 3 Day Durban Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve

Later the same afternoon we came across the female White Rhino with the genetic abnormality, where her horn curves downwards instead of upwards. If this is not a genetic abnormality then during her birth she must have landed awkwardly on her nose causing the growth point in of her horn to twist…Amazing stuff you can see on Tim Brown Tours Durban Safari Tours

After our Safari Game drive we headed back for dinner at Hilltop camp.

The food was great and we then went to bed to get some rest before Day 2’s long game drive down south to look for more of the Big 5.

Day 2: of our Durban 3 day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve.

After a lay in till 6am we had some breakfast and headed out on Safari to see what animals we could find.

We were lucky as usual and had some great sightings of the Big 5. We managed 4 of the Big 5 in this days Tour, Rhino, Lion, Buffalo and Elephant.

Two Male Elephants play fighting on our 3 Day Durban Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve

This picture was great as we came across 3 Elephant Bulls and the one was drinking and the other two had to wait for him to finish as there was only one hole dug in the sand to get water. The two others were just lazy, but in this time they started play fighting which looked really lovely.

Later we spotted a couple of Lioness resting in a dry river bed clearly after a big night out…

Lioness on our 3 Day Durban Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve

As we continued on our Safari Tour in Umfolozi we came across a big male buffalo in the river trying to cool off as it was a hot day.

Old male Buffalo on our 3 Day Durban Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve

We stopped for lunch at the historic Centenary Centre home to operation Rhino in the 1960’s. Without this programme there would be no more Rhinos left in South Africa! South Africa is a Flagship country and KwaZulu-Natal, Durban as well as Hluhluwe Umfolozi have played massive roles in conserving what little we have left in the natural system.

We are very lucky to still be able to visit such natural places like Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve on these kind of Safari Tours out of Durban.

We then returned to Hilltop camp for a quick rest before the open vehicle game drive and dinner.

Then it was off to bed before the next day.

Day 3: of our Durban 3 day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve.

Rising at 6am and having some breakfast before checking out of the Hilltop camp we then spend 3 hours on our final safari game drive looking for anything.

We were lucky as we came across the African Wild dogs the most endangered carnivore in Africa running around on a riverbed. It was a long way off but we still go some sort of photo.

African Wild dog on our 3 Day Durban Day Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve

After spending some time with them and finding a few more of the Big 5 we departed Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve and headed on to St Lucia or Isimangeliso Wetland park. Isimangeliso Wetland Park is 3300 hectares so 3 times the size of Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve. It is home to 4 of the Big 5 and has a beautiful Estuarine system which contains hundreds of  Hippos and Crocodiles.

We took a 2 hour Safari Tour on the Santa Lucia Boat to view these great beasts and the clients really enjoyed it before we headed on to have some lunch in the small town of St Lucia.

After my Burger and the Guests Pizzas we departed for Durban City to drop the clients off at there hotel.

This Durban 3 Day overnight Safari Tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve, Emdoneni Cat Rehab Centre and St Lucia(Isimangeliso Wetland park was amazing and we were lucky to see the amount of animals we saw. If you are reading this Safari Tour blog post I would highly recommend you take the time to visit South Africa and let Tim Brown Tours take you on a Tour of a lifetime.

Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve, Cat rehab and

Isimangeliso Wetland Park(St Lucia) 3 Day Durban

    Safari Tour 10 – 12 Feb 2014

This Durban Safari Tour began in Durban City where I collected my clients for our 3 Day Bush Safari tour to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve. We traveled up the North coast to Emdoneni Cat rehabilitation center where the Safari Tour really began. The clients had a great time interacting with Emdoneni’s 4 Different endangered cat species: Cheetah, Serval, Caracal and African Wild Cat.

Cheetah at emdoneni Cat Rehabilitation center

Once we finished up our Tour of Emdoneni’s Cats we headed on to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve.

We entered at about 12 o’clock in the head of the day but still were very lucky on the hour drive to Hilltop camp hluhluwe where we would be spending the 2 nights of our Durban Safari 3 Day Tour.

After finding these Buffalo we also found Rhino and Elephant in a short space of time. A bonus was the Giraffe, Zebra and Impala.

It was time for lunch on day 1 of our Durban 3 Day safari tour so we stopped at Hilltop camp hluhluwe before checking in and getting back out to find more animals.

Special Sighting of a Fapped Necked Camelion

Flapped neck Camelion in Hluhluwe Umfolozi 3 Day Safari Tour

Once check in and Lunch at Hilltop camp was out the way we headed out to look for Elephants and Rhinos a bit closer to the road.

We had some great luck and found a breeding herd of Elephants as well as solitary males. One bull Elephant was walking down the road towards us which was great fun because he was a relaxed male. When males go through Musth they have 6 x the normal levels of testosterone running through there body. When this happen the can become more aggressive an less tolerant of vehicles. All the more reason to book a Durban Day or overnight Safari Tour with Tim Brown Tours  and not go it alone!

Later that afternoon just before the sun was setting we did see the African Wild Dogs but they were only visible with the Binoculars so sadly the picture is not worth putting up on the website.

After a great dinner and sleep we began Day 2 of our Hluhluwe Umfolozi 3 Day safari Tour heading down south to find cats! The trouble was the temperature rose so quickly that by 9am it was already 34 degrees, the hottest it got was 37 Degrees so sadly the cats were amiss… We did however have other great sightings of Rhino, Warthog, Buffalo, Zebra and the best being a giraffe drinking.

After a wonderful day my clients decided to try the open vehicle evening game drive to see if they would get lucky and find Lions. Sadly for them they didn’t see the lions but did find a Genet and Owl as part of the nocturnals.

After stretching our legs and having gone south again to look for Cats we were unsuccessful but we did find these baby crocodiles in the Umfolozi river and these baby Warthogs suckling from there mother.

We then departed Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve as our Durban 3 day safari Tour was coming to an end and headed to St Lucia (Isimangeliso Wetland park) for a 2 hour boat cruise on the Estuary.

We had a great cruise and saw many Hippos and a crocodile, Fish eagles, Kingfishers and much more.

We ended our Durban 3 day Safari tour in Durban city where I dropped off the clients at there respective hotels.

Although we did not see the big Cats except at Emdoneni Cat rehab Center we still had a hugely successful Safari Tour of Hluhluwe umfolozi game reserve and Isimangeliso wetland park.

Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve Day Safari Tour 28 December 2013

After collecting my client from the Durban Hotel on a beautifully hot Day we began the journey to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve. This was the first to in my new company vehicle the Ford Tourneo which was so comfortable for the clients and for me. It handled better than my Mercedes vito. A great Durban Day Safari Tour!

Another special thing about this tour was I was driving South Africans which is very rare for me. I really enjoyed the experience with them and also covering vast amounts of Zulu History which I really loved.

As it was there first trip to a Game reserve I had to make it special and we were so lucky with Elephant mud wallowing 8 Meters off the road, Warthogs in the mud and water, Buffalo mud wallowing and much more.

The cats alluded us but it was 37 degrees so it was very hot!

We found Zebra, Giraffe, Impala, nyala even a boomslang crossing the hot road!

After spending a few hours in the reserve we stopped for lunch at the Centenary center and then headed back out with windows up and Aircon on! It was very hot!

We had to close the day out eventually at 16:15 and head back to Durban after what was a great day Safari tour from Durban under the African Sun and in the African bushveld.

After collecting my clients from Durban and covering some of the history of the area/Durban we arrived at Emdoneni Cat rehab Center where the clients got to interact with 4 Endangered species of Cat, Notably the Cheetah.

From here we moved off to Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve where we took a gentle game drive to Hilltop camp where we would be spending the next 2 nights.

A good lunch and then we headed back out on Safari to see what we could find. Day one we saw 2 of the Big 5 and Hyena.

Day 2. – Durban Safari Tour

We got up early and managed to find a nice bull elephant is Musth which had knocked a tree into the road so we had to wait for him to move before I could move it enough so we could get by safely.

We saw Giraffe, Rhino, Buffalo, Nyala, Kudu and much more like crocodile and water monitor lizards.

After breakfast we too a rest before lunch and another Safari Drive. This time we spotted a Lioness in the distance but what made this so much better was she walked right up to the vehicle and then down the road. Awesome stuff.

We stopped at hilltop camp for open vehicle game drive safari and the the rest of us went in my vehicle again spotting Rhino with baby, Buffalo, crocodile, terapin etc

We then returned for dinner and bed.

Day 3 : Durban Safari Tour

We got up later at 6am and met for 7am breakfast before checking out and doing a final 3 hour safari tour. We sadly couldnt find the cats again but did come up with baboon, vervet monkeys, Elephant, Buffalo and more.

Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve, Emdoneni and St Lucia 3 day Safari Tour 16th – 18th November 2013

After collecting my Clients from Durban we headed up to Emdoneni Cat rehabilitation Center which they loved, you also end up with a new Facebook profile picture with a Cheetah!

From here we entered into Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve – Big 5 Safari Reserve from the North where we has some good luck with Elephants close to the road and wanting to cross so we allowed them to do so.

After find a few other lovely species of animals we moved on to Hilltop camp where we had lunch checked in and went back out for the final game drive of the day.

We didnt manage to find any Cats but had some other lovely sighting and great Vistas.

It was time to return for dinner and bed.

Day 2- Durban 3 Day Safari Tour

We got up very early 4:45 am to leave at 5am to start a bush walk that the clients wished to do. We began at 5:30 and walked until 8am which was great. We approached Rhino, Giraffe and Zebra but mostly just enjoyed being out in nature. For me it was great as I used to do this for a living and to be back out there on foot was enjoyable.

We returned to Hilltop camp for breakfast and left at 11am on another game drive. Sadly no cats again but loads of other animals. We returned for lunch and then went back out for the last time this day.

    We had a good drive.

    Dinner was next and bed.

Day 3 – Durban 3 Day Safari Tour

We had one last chance to find cats so I just headed to the umfolozi river as I knew the Lions had been in that area. We were very lucky to find one Lioness there with an Elephant. This made us all happy.

After looking for other animals we then departed to St Lucia and viewed Hippos and crocodiles it was great weather.

It was time to now return to Durban and back to city life for the clients.

    A great Tour.
